On 14 September 2014, Ted Hall snapped this photo of the Buoy Tender, “Elm”, while it was servicing the Manasquan Inlet 2 mile mark. The tenders procedure is to haul the buoy on its deck, clean and maintain it and then place it back in the same location. The tenders sophisticated controls maintain its exact position.

Commander’s Letter The recent drop in temperatures over the past couple of weeks has signaled the approach of the holiday season and the end of another year. Many boats have already been hauled and shrink wrapped while the remaining avid fishermen are holding out for the final catch of the year. It has been my pleasure to serve this second year as commander of Flotilla 16-07. During the year, I have had the pleasure of working with many Flotilla members who continue to give of their time and energy to the mission of our organization. I extend a very special thank you and sincere appreciation to the eighteen staff officers who have provided hours of support to the Flotilla and to me. I want to acknowledge the commitment to their individual responsibilities, the time and effort given, and the sacrifice of their families. This has ensured the successes that the Flotilla achieved this year. To try to mention each person’s name and achievements in this letter would be quite lengthy. However, I will go into more specific detail during our upcoming Change of Watch. As you know, our COW is scheduled for 8 December at Simko’s Grill in Brielle. The COW is one of the most important and impressive activities to take place each year. It is the time when Flotilla members gather to witness the changing of the guard and at the same time enjoy being together to enjoy fellowship. Our Commander Elect Glenn Delmonico and Flotilla Vice Commander Elect Brenda Revoir-Feniello will introduce the 2015 Staff Officers and take their pledge. I will in turn introduce the outgoing staff and highlight some of the many achievements that were accomplished through their efforts this past year. I sincerely encourage all members who are able to attend the COW to come and be a part of this honored tradition. In conclusion, I want to say how great it has been working as a team with Glenn Delmonico. He has been a solid friend and dedicated Vice Commander. He has shared the responsibilities of leadership and taken on tasks throughout the year that have resulted in a large commitment of time. I wish both Glenn and Brenda calm seas and a steady wind as they take the helm of this busy Flotilla. To all of you and your families, I wish a happy and safe holiday season.

Flotilla Training Meetings 01 October 2014 & 05 November 2014 During Octobers training meeting, John Ignozza presented the mandatory 1 hour Team Coordination Training (TCT) refresher course. In addition to the OPS members who had not yet completed this currency maintenance requirement, Boat Crew Trainees could participate, as this class provided some excellent overview of the TCT components. The attendees broke into groups to discuss the patrol scenario that was provided, giving everyone opportunity to vet all the wrongs and rights of the sited patrol. In November, John Fisher, FSO-MT, coordinated several topics for the evenings training. Winterization of your vessel was covered by Dennis Georgia. Dennis also presented tips on avoiding Hypothermia. John offered additional insight on the proper wear of uniforms. BETSY BAUER, Editor

World’s Largest Floating Crane at Tappan Zee Bridge - October 9, 2014 Greg Porteus, aboard his “Launch 5”, provided another set of terrific photos, this time centered around the “World’s Largest Floating Crane”, positioned at the Tappan Zee Bridge. The bridge is being replaced, hence the need for such large equipment. John Ignozza was one of our members aboard “Launch 5” on 10/9/14, observing the workings along the Hudson River. “Launch 5” is a refurbished Police Launch often used to assist the Police and CG in patrol and water rescue.

Eagle Scout Candidate Josh Mayo You will recall that at our 15 January 2014, Eagle Scout candidate, Josh Mayo, along with his Eagle Advisor, Joseph Panek, came to our Flotilla meeting to ask us to serve as his Eagle Project benefactor. The project that Josh had decided upon was to build multiple “PFD Loaner Boxes” housing PFD’s for the use by children and donate them to local marinas. The contents would be available for any boaters who might find themselves short of a jacket. The jacket would be borrowed for the day’s outing and placed back in the box upon their return. Since this was a project directly related to marine safety, he looked toward the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 16-07, to support him as the benefactor. The Flotilla wholeheartedly supported this request. Josh researched the design of the box, recruited helpers, determined the costs involved, conducted a fundraiser and procured the materials needed.

In the months that followed his meeting with us, Josh successfully completed the project within the time prescribed by the scouting program. During the mid-summer months, three completed PFD Loaner Boxes were donated to local marinas in the Point Pleasant area. When we return to the waters next year, we may see these accomplishments for ourselves. They will display Josh’s name and that of Flotilla 16-07. The first picture shows, left to right, Joseph Panek, Josh, Paul Harren, who served as his support auxiliarist and Ron Coleman, who first brought this to the Flotilla’s attention. The second photo is of Josh and Paul displaying the contents of the box. Josh and Joe are very appreciative for the support given to this important leadership and learning endeavor.
