Winters Farewell

The Malzones shore home, in the family for generations, was too badly damaged in Superstorm Sandy to remain standing. The arduous task of arranging for the demolition and rebuilding was brought to fruition in March. The family expects to be take occupancy in July and enjoy the lovely barrier town of Lavallette. Helo Solo - Alice Did It!!! Our brave and talented Alice Schroth successfully completed her solo in April. More will follow, but needless to say, this is a milestone. Her ambition is commendable; despite the hours required in training for this feat, she works and devotes countless hours to the Auxiliary. Congratulations Alice! Photos courtesy of ALICE SCHROTH

Commander’s Letter Spring has finally come after what seemed to be an endless winter. With the departure of winter also come the preparations for the 2014 patrol season. With the arrival of warmer temperatures, many of us have begun to spread the fertilizer over the awakening lawn, set out the lawn or deck furniture, and began the preparation of our boats for months of enjoyment on the water. Our Flotilla also has begun to rid ourselves of the winter doldrums and plans are in place to engage in pre-patrol training. Our FSO-MT John Fisher and FSO-OP John Ignozza are preparing for such training at our 7 May training meeting at the Sail Loft. In addition to this, BM2 Christopher Henry, the Operations Officer at Station Manasquan, has been planning weekend joint training sessions. The intent behind this is to coordinate the practices of the Auxiliary coxswains and boat crew with the methods used by the Coast Guard. By so doing, we will be in a better position to provide a unified response when directed by Station Manasquan to respond to assigned missions. It is our hope to increase the number of patrols this season, to provide on-water orientation to the new boat crew trainees, and teach the boating public in the art of safe and pleasurable boating. The Flotilla also spent time this winter planning for another active spring and summer with the continuation of classes on boater safety. The ABS classes are already underway. We are hoping to make our debut with our first presentations of the course, Suddenly In Command. In the final preparation stage is an advanced boater course that reaches beyond what was provided in the ABS and goes to a higher level for the boater who wants more advanced knowledge and information. As always, I encourage all members of Flotilla 16-07 to take an active part in the mission of this Flotilla. If your desire is not on the water, we have many other needs that your talents and time would greatly benefit our varied activities.

Please remember that all of the time that you give to the Auxiliary is time that should be acknowledged. It is vital that you take time to submit periodically a Form 7029 to our FSO-IS Marge Ignozza or directly through the on-line capabilities. We need to show, as a Flotilla, the actual amount of hours we give as volunteers. The submission of these hours confirms to the Coast Guard authorities the time given by the Flotilla, the Division, and District. They need to know the amount of time that we give as volunteers so that they can then request the assistance we need to fulfill our prescribed missions. Semper Paratus Paul Harren, FC

Ralph Waldo Emerson John Fisher, in sorting out his Auxiliary files, came across this inspiring quote. Its message mirrors much of how John conducts his life - thanks John.

Enthusiasm is one of the most powerful engines of success. When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Stamp it with your own personality. Be active, be energetic, be enthusiastic and faithful, and you will accomplish your objective. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm. 3

Flotilla Training Meeting 05 February 2014 February’s topics included dehydration and AUXLMS, our new mandated training. Mike Shymko, our newest member, demonstrated and explained the basics of hydration/dehydration, provided handouts and visuals, including containers of water showing our daily water requirements and how urine color can detect hydration levels. The take-away: drink more water – sip frequently, don’t gulp. Mike added interesting facts to this often discussed topic and delivered it in a unique fashion. He is a born teacher and will be a fine asset to our Instructor corps. John Fisher, FSO-MT, demonstrated on his laptop the methods available to access AUXLMS (Auxiliary Learning Management System) and briefly discussed the courses we are mandated to pass. All these courses are online and members are required to complete these within 5 years. New members are required to complete these within 1 year. Aside from going directly into AUXLMS, there are links in our flotilla & 5NR websites, noted below. John also covered the How-to’s of reporting our hours on the 7029 form and how to access the Auxiliary eDirectory. The meeting was worthwhile and an evening well spent. Flotilla Training Meeting 05 March 2014 Several subjects were included in our March training meeting. Tina Shymko presented a power point of Chapter 2 in the ABS course. This satisfied her classroom presentation requirement for IT qualification. Her addition of photos to the material was a great enhancement – well done Tina! The young Coasties provided instruction on using the portable dewatering pump and described the role of the 25 foot patrol boat. Their graciousness and expertise are evident and we appreciate their willingness to share their knowledge. Plus, all could be accomplished in the warm comfort of the Boat House at Station Manasquan Inlet. BETSY BAUER, Editor

In March, Chris &Janet Malzone embarked on their new home project - a modular to replace their severely Sandydamaged duplex. They expect to be habituating their new abode by this summer. According to Janet, the house was “set” in mid March. Now, the specialized

work such as siding, plumbing, electrical, flooring, etc., needs completion. The first thing she hopes they finish is the steps. “It gets tiring climbing up and down the ladder!” 5

Flotilla Business Meetings 19 February 2014 & 19 March 2014 Our February meeting was held at Harpoon Willy’s, River Rd., Manasquan. This turned out to be an enjoyable venue; it is within a reasonable distance to our usual meeting place and it enabled our members to mingle and eat prior to the meeting. John Fisher was awarded for his PE contributions and also received a Sustained Service Award for his hours of service. The Malzones were also recipients of the Sustained Service Award for all their hours of service. The Sail Loft again served as our venue for the March meeting. Bob Kady was sworn into his role as FSOMA 2014 officer. Bob was also awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his 2013 service as FSO-MA. Alice Schroth received the AUX Annual Service Award for FSO-VE and FSO-PV. BETSY BAUER, Editor

ABS Class 22 March 2014 The first PE class of 2014 was held at the Beech Room in the Visitors Center at Thompson Park in Lincroft. This is the second year we are working with the Monmouth County Park System (MCPS) to promote boating safety. 20 students enrolled and passed the course! They will be receiving the NJ Boating Certificate, enabling them to legally traverse the waterways. With the talented and expanded team of PE instructors, our flotilla is well equipped to fulfill its mission. Many courses are scheduled throughout the spring and early summer. Farewell to Winter - Much Work Remains Winter was no match for the tenacious crews rebuilding the Route 35 roadway or those readying a historic landmark for its 126th season. All those traveling to the northern Ocean County shore towns have come to expect many detours along the Rt. 35 corridor, the primary artery connecting Pt. Pleasant/Bay Head to Island Beach State Park’s entrance. This 12.5 mile stretch is undergoing a massive rebuilding project, expected to take two years to complete. Because Superstorm Sandy ravaged this essential coastal evacuation route for the many boroughs it serves, federal funding was allowed and helped expedite the project. This vast undertaking includes a full depth pavement replacement with a 50 year design life, among many other design elements and improvements. Members of the Bay Head Yacht Club have demonstrated their tenacity in executing its ambitious plan to raise its historic clubhouse to new heights. Blessed by a pool of very talented officers, trustees, committees, chairs, consultants, engineers, managers and contractors, the project is progressing despite weather challenges. Starting with the core/historic clubhouse being temporarily set on the tennis courts (last fall) to being lifted, again, onto its new piling and foundation system (on 1/30/14), it is well on the way to again grace the head of the Barnegat Bay. Quite a feat, especially considering many of the club members suffered their own extensive property loss in Sandy! The fortitude and resolve of our shore residents is impressive – a testament to the value we, in this waterfront/boating area, greatly appreciate. BETSY BAUER, Editor
