The Michigan Pops Orchestra 2017 Solo Concerto Competition The Michigan Pops Orchestra (University of Michigan) is pleased to announce its 2017 Solo Concerto Competition for high school students in the Ann Arbor area. The Concerto Competition is an opportunity for local students to perform a concerto of their choice with members of the Michigan Pops Orchestra. This is a high honor. The following prerequisites must be met before a concerto performance is awarded to a student: 1. Auditionees must audition on an instrument that is included in the following categories: woodwind, brass, string, and percussion. Piano concertos are not accepted for this year’s competition. 2. All performances must be no longer than ten minutes. In case the selection exceeds ten minutes, prepare an appropriate cut to meet the ten-minute maximum. 3. All selections must have an orchestra accompaniment that is currently available. If you are unsure if a selection is appropriately scored for orchestra, please contact Michigan Pops Orchestra directly. Virtuosic and lyrical music selection is recommended. 4.

All participants must provide their own accompanist for the audition, if selected for second round.

5. Selection will be based on evaluations written by board members and the conductor of Michigan Pops Orchestra.

Application Process 1. Send an uncut recording of your performance to Michigan Pops Orchestra (audio is accepted, but video is preferred). A partial excerpt of the selection is acceptable. Piano accompaniment is recommended, but not required. 2.

Send a short paragraph describing your musical background to Michigan Pops Orchestra.

Submit all materials by Tuesday, January 3rd ​ ​, 2017.

4. Recordings will be evaluated by board members and the conductor of Michigan Pops Orchestra. Second round auditions (callbacks) will be sent out by Monday, January 9th​ ​, 2017. 5.

In the event you are selected for second round: a.

Bring one copy of the original musical score for jury reference.

Piano accompaniment is required.

c. Auditions will take place on the morning of Saturday, January 14th​ ​, 2017 from 10 am - 1 pm in the UofM Music School. 6. The Concerto Competition winner will be notified by Tuesday, January 17th​ ​, 2017 and play with the orchestra at our spring concert on Sunday, April 2nd ​ ​, 2017 at the Michigan Theater.
