Indoor Track
Issue 2
By Alexis Behilo Did you know Hale-Ray has an indoor track team? Indoor track started a few years ago when it only consisted of a couple kids. Now the team is up to about 25 athletes! But what do you do in indoor track? You’d think you couldn’t do much since it’s inside, but in fact, the track fits quite well indoors. There are many events athletes do such as long distance running, middistance running, and short distance running. The track is 200 meters in length and running events go from a 55 meter dash to a 3200 meter run. There are other events that include little to no running such as long jump, pole vault, high jump, and shot put. Who can join the track team? The events seem very difficult as if only people with born skill can join. But Coach Berger, the indoor track coach says otherwise, “Anyone can join, even if you’ve never run before.” She states, “I am very happy to help anyone who wants to either learn how to run or to jump, or throw something. And, it doesn’t matter if you’re super fast or you don’t feel that you are fast enough, it doesn’t matter. Just
come out, have fun, learn and you will be better.” Indoor track practice happens every day from 2:15 to 3:30. Athletes run outside and do workouts. Although it is winter and the weather is freezing out, the track team still runs. Indoor track has meets every couples of weeks at Hillhouse in New Haven. These meets usually don’t end till 9 o’clock at night. What is an indoor track meet like? “Controlled Chaos.” Berger laughs, “There’s a lot of stuff going on at once, but it’s a lot of fun. It’s great to see all the teams and all the athletes trying to do their best. It is a great time to, you know, meet other people from other schools and build relationships. It’s fun, but chaos.” So far the track team has been to three meets so far and everyone is getting stronger and improving. The next indoor track meet is on Tuesday, January 10th. Coach Bergers says, “I am very optimistic that this program will continue to grow each year.”

Teachers’ Bizarre Jobs! By Ashley Ross The teachers in our school have had jobs you would never expect them to ever have. Mr. Boardman used to be a limo driver before he became a math teacher. The next teacher had a job you would never guess. Mr. Freeman used to work on a pickle farm before he became a gym teacher. The next teacher is Mrs. Sammann who worked on an assembly line folding cardboard boxes before she became a math teacher. Few know about Mrs. Parthasarthy's previous job was working for a water treatment before she became a science teacher, which involved a large pool of sewage. She stated, "I had to be careful not to fall in." The next teacher and last teacher is Mrs. Erazmus who used to work at McDonald’s before she became a history teacher. She actually worked at many fast food restaurants before becoming a teacher. So next time you see your teachers, ask them about their previous jobs.

Recently there has been a talk of a “ Seasonal affective disorder” which is a disorder that takes place during the late fall and early winter months, when the less natural sunlight is available. This disorder is a form of winter sadness and depression, winter is a long cold season that has the tendency to drag on. After Christmas time, everyone is counting down the days till spring, but we still have several months filled with freezing weather and possible snow days. Instead of moping around, we should enjoy the season of winter while it lasts because soon we will be wishing for colder weather. There are many enjoyable indoor and outdoor things to do during the winter that are inexpensive and fun! On a cold dreary day instead of sitting at home complaining about New England weather, you should get out of the house and have some fun with your friends or family.
