N17/N18 Project Update Since the circula on of the Q1 2015 newsle er the gen‐ eral public will have seen growing evidence of site ac vity as the Contractors open up work on a number of fronts along the route of the scheme. The design and construc on works remain on programme and there have been 116,812 accident free hours worked on the Project up to the 31st March 2015. The Contractors have established their site com‐ pounds and mobilised their teams with in excess of 600 people having received Health & Safety induc ons to date. The bulk of the work carried out in Q1 2015 comprised the seasonal site clearance

works including demoli ons, removal of ditches, hedge‐ rows, trees and other vege‐ ta on. This is now complete and in addi on most of the 57km mainline has been
fenced. The establishment of the fencing has been aug‐ mented by surveying and preparatory work for site accesses and thus has al‐ lowed other ac vi es such as drainage works and some topsoil strip to commence. Some early plan ng of trees

and hedging at several loca‐ ons has taken place ahead of the main earthworks which will allow the early plan ng to become estab‐ lished prior to the comple‐ on of the Project. Discus‐ sions between DirectRoute and U lity providers is ongo‐ ing and some ESB diversion works have already taken place. Amongst other community ini a ves ins gated in the period safety officers from Lagan, Roadbridge and Sisk took part in a Keep Safe event in Gort a ended by 5th and 6th class pupils. The aim of the event was to help children to become more aware of personal and home safety, learn how to react to dangerous situa ons and to learn how to stay safe within the context of road safety.

OperaƟon
As the work on the project gathers pace the public will encounter increased levels of traffic management established for the safety of construc on workers and the general public. DirectRoute would ask that road users observe all signage and re‐ duced speed limits to help ensure the safety of all. Traffic management signage to alert public road users has been and will con nue to be erected throughout the scheme, where the construc on works interact with the exis ng road network. Temporary road diversions are being constructed adjacent to exis ng roads at the loca ons of new bridges traversing the new road. These temporary diversions will allow two‐way traffic to be maintained while works to construct bridges are pro‐ gressed thereby minimising disrup on to road users. Examples include the R446 (old N6), the R347 at Owenbristy, the R338 at Gortroe, the L31030 at Tobernavean and the L6143 at Mahanagh. Reduced speed limits are being implemented through specific sec ons of road fol‐ lowing consulta on with Galway County Council, An Garda Síochána and the Na‐ onal Roads Authority. Examples include the N63 (reduced locally to 60kph), the R348 (reduced locally to 60kph), the M6 (reduced locally at the loca on of the Rathmorrissey Interchange to 80kph, from May 2015), the R339 (reduced locally to 60kph) and the N17 north of Tuam (reduced locally to 60kph). The exis ng M6 will see the hard shoulder being cordoned off on both sides of the road at the proposed Rathmorrissey Interchange. This will facilitate construc on works while ensuring two way traffic is being maintained on the M6. Temporary vehicle safety barriers shall be installed to close the hard shoulder, ensuring the safety of road users and construc on personnel.
Drilling and Blas ng – Drilling and blas ng of rock in Construc on plant, these areas shall be carried out to allow the rock to be drilling and explosive excavated to the required level for the new road. equipment, trucks, jeeps Structures – Construc on of new under bridges, over bridges and underpasses across the project. The new structures will span exis ng rivers and roads or provide access for local landowners to their property. Works shall include piling works, concrete works, installa on of precast concrete beams, localised drainage and earthworks, surfacing works, etc.

SAFETY NOTICE Construction activity by its nature exposes people to a higher level of risk than many other activities. DirectRoute have detailed arrangements in place to manage the risks for both those involved in building the project and for the general public. We would ask you to co-operate with us in ensuring the project is delivered as safely as possible. You can help us by:1. 2.
Taking care at the various locations where the project crosses the existing road network and complying with any restrictions imposed under local temporary traffic management arrangements including any reduced speed limits. Keep clear of site. This applies particularly to children for whom construction sites can pose a particular attraction.
