Attending to the Parts of the Analytic Paragraph Paper Thesis: In his epic The Odyssey, Homer uses the juxtaposition of Telemachus to Pisistratus to reveal the degree of Telemachus’ stunted growth due to his father’s absence, as well as to clarify the goal toward which Telemachus strives. Paragraph Thesis: ______________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Context: _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ Evidence: “Daydreaming so as he sat among the suitors, / he glimpsed Athena now / and straight to the porch he went, mortified / that a guest might still be standing at the doors” (1.138-1.141). Analysis: Homer’s description of Telemachus as “daydreaming” conflicts with Telemachus’ position as the nominal head of his household. Presumably, as a leader, Telemachus should have many responsibilities demanding his attention, and yet he is lost in daydreams, an activity that screams idleness, which is the absence of responsibility. Additionally, these daydreams so preoccupy the would-be leader’s mind that they prevent him from immediately noticing a stranger’s presence. Telemachus’ mortification at this lapse conveys his awareness of the rules of appropriate behavior, the demands of xenia. His mortification also suggests his awareness that his behavior falls short of hospitality’s requirements. Telemachus knows the manner in which he should treat guests, and yet he is so unaccustomed to visitors or so unused to the responsibilities of hospitality or so lost in his daydreams he fails to discharge his responsibilities promptly. Homer’s detail “straight to the porch he went” communicates Telemachus’ desire to repair his lapse: he does not want to keep the stranger waiting longer than he already has. This desire to improve indicates that while Telemachus clearly has much growing to do—as evidenced by the limited nature of his obligations—he also has the willingness to make the necessary strides.
Paragraph Thesis: On the other hand, Pisistratus, a contemporary to Telemachus is not only well-versed in his responsibilities as leader, but adept in delivering on those responsibilities. Context: Nestor’s kingdom of Pylos is the first stop on Telemachus’ mini-odyssey. He and Athena find the Pylians engaged in banqueting and celebration. Evidence: “As soon as they saw the strangers, all came crowding down, / waving them on in welcome, urging them to sit. / Nestor’s son Pisistratus first to reach them, / grasped their hands and sat them down at the feast / on fleecy throws spread out along the sandbanks…” (3.38-3.42).
