Part 2: Complete Sentences English II
Purpose We will review what a sentence needs to be considered complete.
In general, it’s important to recognize complete sentences in order to communicate effectively in our writing: incomplete sentences are incomplete thoughts. You will also need this for: college, work, STAAR, SAT/ACT, or writing a cover letter for a job application.
Complete Sentence A sentence must… Have a subject
Verb: an action or state of being
Have a verb Be a complete thought. Subject: controls the verb

Incomplete verb: was laughing
Incomplete thought Sometimes, a sentence has both a subject and a verb, but it is not a complete thought:

These are subordinate clauses, meaning they cannot stand alone. They need to be attached to another sentence.
Directions Read over the sentences combinations you wrote. Circle the main verb in the sentence and label it “verb.” Underline the subject in the sentence and label it “subject.” EXAMPLE:
