Part 2: Complete Sentences English II

Purpose  We will review what a sentence needs to be considered complete.

 In general, it’s important to recognize complete sentences in order to communicate effectively in our writing: incomplete sentences are incomplete thoughts.  You will also need this for: college, work, STAAR, SAT/ACT, or writing a cover letter for a job application.

Complete Sentence  A sentence must…  Have a subject

 Verb: an action or state of being

 Have a verb  Be a complete thought.  Subject: controls the verb

Examples of complete sentences SUBJECT

VERB

 Samantha is originally from Beaumont. SUBJECT

VERB

 My friend Ramon traveled to China. SUBJECT

Each sentence is a complete thought!

 Before 1989, just two states – Nevada and New Jersey – had casino gambling. VERB

Incomplete sentences Incomplete

Why?

 Samantha from Beaumont.

 Missing verb – did what?

 Traveled to China.

 Missing subject – who?

 Tina laughing loudly.

 Incomplete verb: was laughing

Incomplete thought  Sometimes, a sentence has both a subject and a verb, but it is not a complete thought:

 When we were younger.  As soon as he left.  If you say that to me again.

These are subordinate clauses, meaning they cannot stand alone. They need to be attached to another sentence.

Directions  Read over the sentences combinations you wrote.  Circle the main verb in the sentence and label it “verb.”  Underline the subject in the sentence and label it “subject.”  EXAMPLE:

SUBJECT

VERB

 The pizza in the middle of the table is fresh from the oven.

Directions  Are there any subordinate clauses in your sentence? If so, put brackets around them. SUBORDINATE CLAUSE

 Even though Francisco stuck straws up his nose, Melissa ate her sandwich and continued to ignore him.

Moving forward…  We want to avoid incomplete sentences (or fragments) like the plague.  Keep these notes handy so that when you are editing your writing, you can refer to them!
