KINDRED

CALL TO WORSHIP

Abbey Ammerman, Deacon of the Week

O God, make us fearless prophets and a faithful church, Increasingly committed to serving neighbor and loving You. O God, show us marvel and wonder in each sunrise and sunset, in each friend and stranger. Give us courage to stay Your course of love, mercy, kindness, and justice. O God, help us to exchange violence and self-interest for love and unity. Stir up in us powerful resistance to greed, fear, and despair. O God, sensitize our hearts to children, the elderly, all vulnerable and marginalized peoples, So that we may be instruments of Your peace, living faithfully in a frayed world. O God, give us boldness to partner with Your reconciling work every day. Guide us with Your presence now during worship and especially when we leave these doors. Open our hearts to hear You above the noise, and lead us forward toward complete shalom. O God, make us fearless prophets and a faithful church, in the name of Christ. Amen! Congregational responses in bold. Audio enhancement devices available for use during worship. Please ask an usher for assistance.

L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD HEBREW LESSON

Amos/Amós 8:1-12 Lauren Zehyoue

1This

is what the Lord GOD showed me—a basket of summer fruit. 2He said, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the LORD said to me, The end has come upon my people Israel; I will never again pass them by. 3The songs of the temple shall become wailings in that day,” says the Lord GOD; “the dead bodies shall be many, cast out in every place. Be silent!” 4Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring to ruin the poor of the land, 5saying, “When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practice deceit with false balances, 6buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of the wheat.” 7The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds. 8Shall not the land tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who lives in it, and all of it rise like the Nile, and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt? 9On that day, says the Lord GOD, I will make the sun go down at noon, and darken the earth in broad daylight. 10I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on all loins, and baldness on every head; I will make it like the mourning for an only son, and the end of it like a bitter day. 11The time is surely coming, says the Lord GOD, when I will send a famine on the land; not a famine of bread, or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD. 12They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the LORD, but they shall not find it. 8Así

PSALTER

Psalm 82 Rameen Chaharbaghi, Cantor

Refrain. The Lord hears the cry of the poor. Blessed be the Lord. God stands in the divine council; in the midst of the gods, the Lord holds judgment. “How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Give justice to the weak and the orphan. Maintain the right of the lowly and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy. Deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” Refrain. The wicked have neither knowledge nor understanding. They walk around in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken. I say, “You are gods, children of the Most High, all of you. Nevertheless, you shall die like mortals, and fall like any prince.” Rise up, O God, judge the earth; for all the nations belong to you! Refrain. EPISTLE LESSON

Colosenses/Colossians 1:1–14 Reverend Palacios

1Pablo,

1Paul,

an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father. 3In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 4for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel 6that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. 7This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, 8and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit. 9For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10so that you may

lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. 11May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully 12giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia Richard Proulx (1937-2010)/Leo Nestor Teresa Blessing, Cantor

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Love the Lord with all your heart, and your neighbor as yourself. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. (Luke 10, adapted) GOSPEL LESSON

Luke/Lucas 10:25-37 Teresa Blessing

25Just

then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” 27He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” 28And he said to him, “You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.” 29But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.’ 36Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” 37He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” 25Y

This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God.

PRAYERS FOR CALVARY AND LORD’S PRAYER Reverend Palacios After the Pastoral Prayer, we invite everyone to pray the Lord’s Prayer in your native language. Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. SERMON

TODAY COMBINED SUNDAY SCHOOL, June 12 - August 28, 9:45 a.m. in Butler Hall. All Adults and Youth are invited! We will study Jim Wallis’ latest book, America’s Original Sin: Racism, White Privilege, and the Bridge to a New America. Jim Wallis published his book this year so churches like ours could be leaders in the ongoing struggle for racial justice and racial reconciliation. He takes us through the history of our country and through a careful study of scripture to show how racism is our country’s original sin. He challenges us to turn away from this sin and follow God into a “new America.” During our series, different teachers lead us through a chapter each week, touching on their areas of expertise. As many in our country advocate for more rights and freedom, our book study is sure to be relevant for a time such as this. Don’t miss this series and this opportunity to learn and engage deeply about race, white privilege, sin, and reconciliation. Contact Pastor Elijah. FEARLESS PROPHETS, FAITHFUL CHURCH. Inspired by the hymn O Young and Fearless Prophet, through July we look closer at some of the Major and Minor Prophets of the Hebrew Bible and the Gospels. We’ll study Elijah, Elisha, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Amos, and a few other fearless prophets whose stories teach us how to be a more faithful and fearless church. PASTOR ELIJAH AWAY. Pray for Pastor Elijah as he travels to his hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana to foster healing in the aftermath of the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling. Pastor Elijah will return to the office Tuesday. DISCUSSION GROUP. Join Pastor Erica in the Calvary Library, 12:30-1:30 p.m. for small group discussion as we process current events and together and consider how to contribute to racial reconciliation.
