G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE

Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied, SWV 35 Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) Carolina Choir O sing unto the Lord a new song; for he hath done marvelous things: His right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory. The Lord hath made known his salvation: His righteousness hath he openly showed in the sight of the heathen. He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: Make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. Sing unto the Lord with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm. With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the Lord, the King. Let the sea roar, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together before the Lord. For he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, And the people with equity. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit As it was in the beginning so now and forever. Amen. (Psalm 98)

HYMN

For All the Saints / Hoy, por los Santos SINE NOMINE

For all the saints, who from their labors rest Who thee, by faith, before the world confessed Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest: Alleluia, Alleluia! From earth’s wide bounds, from ocean’s farthest coast Through gates of pearl streams in the countless host Singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost: Alleluia, alleluia! LITANY OF PRAISE, REMEMBRANCE AND THANKSGIVING

Reverend Zehyoue Calvary Ringers

For martyrs and saints of every time and place, who in life and death have witnessed to your truth, doing justice and loving mercy— we praise you, O God. For those we have known and loved, for teachers and pastors, neighbors and friends, for parents and grandparents, husbands and wives, brothers and sisters, for all who by their faithful obedience and steadfast hope have shown us the love of Jesus—we praise you, O God. And for those gone from us, if there be any hurts unforgiven or words left unsaid, we pray that you would give us the grace to let these things go, and to place every sorrow and regret in your mercy and care. We thank you for all who, in choosing the way of our brother Jesus, remained faithful— in the midst of trial, they held out hope; in the midst of hatred, they kindled love; in the midst of despair, they clung to your promise. Lord, keep us grateful for their witness and, like them, eager to follow in the way of Christ, until we join with all your saints in joy around your throne forever. And now receive our gratitude for these saints, gone from us in this past year, yet always dear to the heart of Calvary: Kenneth Carr

MUSICAL MEDITATION

No. 1 Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Carolina Choir Why has light been given to the weary of soul, and life to the troubled hearts? Why? They who wait for death, and it doesn’t come; they who dig for it even out of secret places; Those who almost rejoice and are happy that they achieve the grave. Why? And to the man whose way is hidden, and from whom God himself has been concealed? Why? Let us lift up our hearts, together with our hands, to God in heaven. Behold, we value them as blessed who have endured. (Continues next page)

You have heard of the patience of Job, and the Lord’s conclusion you have seen: For the Lord is merciful and has compassion! With peace and joy I depart in God’s will, my heart and mind are comforted, calm and quiet. As God had promised me: death has become my sleep. (Job 3:20-23, Lamentations 3:41, James 5:11, Martin Luther) MORNING PRAYER

L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD HEBREW LESSON

Haggai/ Hageo 2:1-9 Kyerra Dorsey

1In

the second year of King Darius, in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the prophet Haggai, saying: 2Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say, 3Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing? 4Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the LORD; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the LORD; work, for I am with you, says the LORD of hosts, 5according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear. 6For thus says the LORD of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land; 7and I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendor, says the LORD of hosts. 8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the LORD of hosts. 9The latter splendor of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity, says the LORD of hosts. 1

HEBREW LESSON

Job/ Job 19:23-27a Brayan Gonzalez

23“O

that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book! 24O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock forever! 25For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; 26and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, 27whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me! GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia Richard Proulx (1937-2010)/Leo Nestor Miles Herr, Cantor

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Indeed they cannot die anymore— They are like angels and are children of God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! (Luke 20, adapted) GOSPEL LESSON

Luke/ Lucas 20:27-38 Amy Dale

Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to him and asked him a question: Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother. Now there were seven brothers; the first married and died childless; then the second and the third married her, and so in the same way all seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had married her. Jesus said to them: Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. Indeed they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection. And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive. 27

27 Llegando

This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God. HYMN 566

PRAYERS FOR CALVARY AND LORD’S PRAYER Reverend Zehyoue After the Pastoral Prayer, we invite everyone to pray the Lord’s Prayer in your native language. Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. SERMON
