APUSH 2014-2015 Unit 1 A New World Secondary Source Additional Reading Directions: After reading chapter 1 from your text, complete this additional reading activity by 1. Reading the excerpt, 2. Highlighting key events, people, and most importantly… the author’s key arguments, 3. Annotating in the space provided, considering the objectives and key concepts from Period 1 as well as major historical themes such as the development of American identity. Source: New Worlds for All: Indians, Europeans, and the Remaking of Early America by Colin G. Calloway, excerpts taken from the Introduction, “The Kaleidoscope of Early America,” and the Conclusion, “New Americans, First Americans.” Background: Modern day historians generally cast European colonization as malicious genocide. While it is true that approximately 90% of the American Indian population was wiped out by disease and conquest, the story is much more complex. American Indians' contribution to American culture and identity is often overlooked, although European effect on Indian life was larger than the other way around. In New Worlds, the author presents and defends his thesis that Indian culture contributed in many significant ways to what would eventually become a distinctly American way of life.

APUSH 2014-2015 Unit 1 A New World Secondary Source Additional Reading Food For Thought At the time of the American Revolution, colonists were using the term “Redskin” in reference to American Indians. Color metaphors were also used for other races, i.e. white man, black man. In the 18th century, such terms were not controversial nor did they necessarily carry innate racism. In the 19th century it remained common and was also used by American Indians like Sitting Bull who once said, “"I am a red man. If the Great Spirit had desired me to be a white man he would have made me so in the first place.” However, as time progressed, terms describing people by color increasingly became condescending or judgmental in their usage. For example, after WWII, usage of the term “redskin” appeared in text and film portraying American Indians as “noble savages” who were, in one way or another, inferior to whites… leading to many modern day controversies over sports teams, logos, and mascots that use such terms. Regarding the Washington Redskins (football team), many groups have been putting pressure on the team to change its name because it is offensive and racist to American Indians… while others claim that the hundreds of team names and mascots named for American Indians show nothing but respect and admiration, and that the pride of the organization and its fans should continue to be Redskins. Using your knowledge of history, new insight from the additional reading, and current events regarding the Washington Redskins, write a thesis in response to the following prompt.

The Washington Redskins should change their name, because the term and mascot perpetuate a legacy of racial condescension. Support, refute, or modify this assertion. Use this thesis formula: X. However, Y because ABC. X (an opposing argument to your response) Y (your thesis/main response) ABC (three pieces of evidence supporting your response)

At the grading this summer, a reader wore a Chicago Blackhawk jersey (hockey team). He was asked to return to his hotel room and change due to the jersey being offensive. What other symbols are offensive? Do you agree with the policy of banning images that are offensive to others?
