“It has been brought to my attention that unidentified former staffers allege that they were the victims of inappropriate sexual conduct while employed with the office sometime in the past. As in any office environment, there have been occasions when employees have brought workplace concerns to my attention and those concerns were promptly addressed. However, none of the concerns brought to my attention involved allegations of sexual harassment – behavior that I will not tolerate. Had I been made aware of any concerns about sexual harassment in my office, those concerns would have been promptly investigated and appropriate disciplinary action taken, including termination of employment of any individual engaged in sexually harassing behavior. I am very passionate about this issue and I have a strong record of supporting civil rights and non-discrimination, both in legislation and in my own office. I have been very active on the issue of eradicating workplace harassment and supported legislation requiring mandatory anti-harassment training for all Members and House employees. In addition, I have maintained a professional work environment in all respects and long ago adopted a written EEO policy and an anti-harassment policy which informs employees of their right to work in a safe and productive work environment. These and other office policies encourage employees to come forward with workplace concerns and staff have received training on EEO and anti-harassment issues. I welcome hearing directly from current or former employee regarding any concerns about inappropriate sexual conduct or behavior in my office. right to pursue a claim through the Congressional Accountability Act (CAA). It is unfortunate that I am just learning of these allegations by unidentified former employees for the first time. My office will nonetheless take all necessary steps to root out and address any inappropriate behavior. I have requested the assistance of House and outside independent management resources to investigate and assess the current environment of my office so that I can take appropriate corrective action as necessary. The Chief of Staff has been placed on administrative leave pending results of the investigation.
