Does your vote count? High Tech Middle Chula Vista, 8th grade
Plurality In plurality voting, the candidate with the most votes wins.
Project Overview In this project, we will explore different methods of voting in order to select one that is the most “fair” for our school elections. Along the way, we will discuss whether the U.S. national voting methods are fair, and consider other countries’ voting methods.

DOES YOUR VOTE COUNT?
FALL 2016
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: • What does it mean to be “fair” in voting? What are the most fair methods of voting? How do
circumstances impact which methods are most fair? • What different data analysis methods can be used to determine the winners of votes? How does
this impact the outcome? • How do other countries’ voting systems compare to those in the United States?
Project Phases and Deliverables
calculate the winner of the election based on the votes that are collected.
Phase I:
Learning Goals
In phase one of this project, students will create their own voting systems to determine the winner of a vote for a class name. By analyzing the results of each vote, students will explore which voting systems were most fair and what circumstances contributed to that result. They will then use their learning to design voting systems for other classroom decisions.
Math Ratios, fractions, and percents will be used to quantify and analyze votes for candidates as well as create and examine multiple definitions of “fairness”. Students will design polls for provide actionable data for ASB campaign teams
Phase II:
Information Technology
In phase two of this project, students will explore established voting systems used in the United States and in other countries for elected officials. They will compare and contrast these voting systems- how do they perform with regards to equity, third party candidates, and other factors?
Students will begin to develop proficiency with spreadsheet tools and use those tools to enhance their data analysis. Infographic software will helps students develop compelling displays of their data.
Phase III: In phase three of this project, students will design a voting system for the school election, including creating a spreadsheet that will
