W9PE's FREE CW MORSE CODE COURSE If you want to learn Morse code you came to the right place. Be you a senior citizen desiring to fulfill a put off ambition or a scout planning to earn a merit badge here is an easy free way to master the code. When we start to learn Morse code we tend to count the dots and dashes. One dot followed by one dash is an “A.” This works, but we only can count so fast. Hence copy speed is limited to a few words per minute. To increase speed above this a large amount of additional practice (sometime full relearning) is required. The Farnsworth method of learning Morse code sends the characters at high speed with the spacing between letters long to train our mind to associate a letter/character with a sound, rather than counting dots and dashes. The goal is to prevent counting and start with the sound just as we learn language. Koch found that some that learned this way also hit a roadblock hence he suggested that the characters be learned at higher speed, but only a few letters at a time until they were solidly learned. This course will sound the characters at 16 wpm with spacing between letters/characters long enough to have an actual speed of 5 wpm. Options allow higher rates. This course uses both Farnsworth and Koch and adds a third item, some instant gratification. This positive feedback lets you know that you are making progress, i.e. words are copied as soon as possible even in the first lesson. This course is based upon the software program "CwType" for Windows. It is made available here with the author, DXSoft’s Sergei Podstrigailo UA9OV’s permission. The practice macros in the "READ_ME.doc" file (the individual lessons) are then added to Sergie’s macro files to complete the CW course. The macros are in English, but feel free to translate to any other language and distribute the course. You have permission to distribute "CwType," however you must do it at no charge (for free) and no modifications to its original configuration when distributed are allowed. After you download the CwType program place it in a separate folder. Then left click it, it will self-extract into three files. You install the program by left clicking “setup.” After CwType is installed you will see that it is an excellent Morse code generation program. Next using its “Setup” (CwType upper left) then the “Sound” tab, set the “Output sound card number” to “Default sound card” if you have external speakers, or to “Internal speaker” if you do not. You may find that a lower frequency about “750” on most computers is a little louder and easier to copy, however you should set CwType to a frequency you are comfortable with. Try a few settings. Be sure to apply and save the one you select, using the “Apply, Save and OK tabs,” Then at the top of CwType set the “Sp: to 80,” the “D/D: to 3” and the “ILS: to 22”. “Sp” sets the character speed and “ILS” sets the spacing between characters, i.e. inter letter spacing. If you change one and nothing happens, press the “Enter” key on your computer. These settings will give you CW letters sounds at 16 words per minute however due to the long spaces between letters and words the program will be sending CW only at 5 words per minute. You can adjust these as you desire, however do not use a lower speed setting for each character “Sp” or you will delete the Farnsworth criteria and in the end have to spend more time to learn the code. Now you must add the macros I have provided to the program. For now just load one, the ABCD macro. Highlight the “cF1 ABCD” macro below (in this READ_ME file,) just the paragraph with the ABCD’s and copy it using “Control C.” To highlight, you position the cursor at the beginning of the paragraph; left click the mouse and drag it to the end of the paragraph. Just as “Control C” means press the “Control” key and the “C” at the same time, the “cF1” means press the “Control” key and the “F1” key at the same time and “aF1” means press “Alt” (Alternate) key and the “F1” key at the same time. Now go back to the CwType program and left click on the “Edit Macros” tab. Then move your cursor to the left most part of the space to the right of “cF1.” Delete anything there with your keyboard “Delete” key.

The CwType program I have had a number of CQs, the “Delete” key erased all. Now with your cursor still set at the left of the now blank space to the right of “cF1” type “Control V “ and the ABCD paragraph will become CwType’s “cF1 macro. Be sure to apply and save them using the “Apply, Save and OK tabs. “ All other macros are installed into CwType in the same way. But defer the rest of the set up until you try the first course lesson. With CwType running and its “TX” turned on type some letter A, B, C and Ds. Learn the sounds of 4 letters A, B, C and D by typing them on the keyboard. Spend as much time as you need until you think you know their sounds. (Some will learn the sounds fast; others including me required some extra time.) When you feel that you know the sounds of the 4 letters, run macro “cF1” and copy the macro transmission with a pencil and paper. If you are having a hard time copying the macro, stop and go back to learning the sounds by manually typing the ABCD letters. It should be obvious that you should not look at the computer screen when you are copying the macros. You will know when you are copying words, but you can check the screen after the lesson to see how you have done. To assure you have mastered the 4 characters speed up the transmission increase “Sp: above 80,”and/or reduce the “ILS: below 22.” IF you copied the macro correctly (assuming that you have not memorized it,) you now know the first 4 letters of the alphabet. Some of us have better memory skills than language skills, see the last paragraph before the macros if you fall into that category and you are memorizing the macros. Now go back and load the rest of the macros. When you can copy cF1 ABCD without error, add EFGH to your practice. Again learn their sounds by typing each letter on your keyboard. Then run macro cF2 EFGH. Continue to on to the next set of letters as you master each set. I would suggest you pick a fixed time each day to practice for example Monday through Friday at 6:00 PM. But you pick it, at least 4 sessions a week. At each practice session first make certain that you have not slipped back with a little review and then start where you left off. You can do more than a review and a new lesson at one setting, but do not spend more than 30 minutes if you are tired and/or bored. At the same time you must spend the full 30 minutes at most practices if you are to succeed. However do not set the speed slower than the 16 WPM you started with. If you do it will take longer to master the code. Last but not least, if start to memorize the macros you will have to add additional study material. You can add most anything from the WEB or any text computer file into the unused macros af8 through aF12. If you memorize the macros very early, before you have learned many characters, you can mix up the order of the characters and words in the macros. You also can use another free SW program from G4FON at: http://www.g4fon.net/CW%20Trainer.htm Install it, and then set the “Characters to 42,” and “Pitch” as you desire. Using that program’s “Setup” and then its “Morse Character Setup” uncheck the characters you want to eliminate from your practice or only check the ones you need more practice on.
