City Manager’s Office
Memo TO: FROM: DATE: SUBJECT:
City Council Robert Clark, City Manager September 25, 2015 Weekly Update
Vacant Buildings As indicated during the Council discussion of vacant buildings, we do not have to wait for the revised ordinance to take effect to start enforcement efforts. The City Attorney is putting together a series of form letters that will be used at each stage of the process, and the Building Official is confirming the list of currently vacant buildings. I have asked the City Attorney to train the enforcement staff, and meet with them on a regular basis to make sure that they are following the proper steps. There will be a modest cost associated with his oversight which we will discuss with City Council when the ordinance comes back for the second reading. El Nino Preparations The Public Works Department has been clearing drainage channels and maintaining drainage facilities in anticipation of a heavy rainy season. We will have extra staff on duty during heavy rain storms to check areas that have experienced problems in the past. There will be a community town hall for all Ojai Valley residents on Thursday, October 15 at the Oak View Community Center which will consist of public presentations by the National Weather Service and various disaster response agencies. Also, our staff will be attending a FEMA/OES (State Office of Emergency Services) sponsored incident recovery workshop in November to make sure we are able to access any Federal or State support that may be needed in the event of storm damage. Sheriff Body Cameras The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department is planning to start using body cameras over the course of the next year. The units will be purchased this fall and department personnel will be trained on how to use them. Actual use of body cameras in the field is expected to start in early 2016. A fee covering the City’s fair share of the annual cost will be assessed starting in FY 2017-18, and is estimated to be about $12,800 per year. Teen Movie Night Calling all Ojai teens! On Friday, September 25, the Ojai Recreation Department will be hosting a Teen Movie Night in the Boyd Center’s Multipurpose from 6:30 – 9:30 pm. The featured movie will be “The Hobbit 3”, and the evening will begin with free play in the game room, pizza, popcorn and beverages all for the very low price of $5! The next teen movie is scheduled for Friday, October 30 and will feature the movie, “World War Z”. Student ID is required at the door.
