WHO IS GARRY MONK? Garry Monk Alan (Bedford, England, March 6, 1979), is a former footballer and current English coach. He played in the position of defender and his last team as a player was Swansea City of the Premier League of England. Monk began his youth career at Torquay United F.C. of the English fourth division, making five appearances during the 1995-96 season, at the end of that season he signed for Southampton where he completed his career as a youth, and became a professional along with the saints in May 1997. Monk returned to the Torquay on loan in September 1998 returning to Southampton in November 1998, where he immediately joined the first team, making his debut alongside him, against Derby County on November 28, 1998, entering as a substitute in place of the injured Monkou Ken. In September 1999, he spent a season on loan at Stockport County before returning to the first saint team for two games in January 2000.
He later had a loan spell at Oxford United (in January 2001), but was called back to Southampton, by Glenn Hoddle due to a series of injuries among the Southampton defenders. In May 2001, he started in the last two Southampton games, against Manchester United and Arsenal, both of which resulted in victories for the saints.
Monk had one more assignment with Sheffield Wednesday (from December 2002 to March 2003), with the possibility of a permanent transfer, which did not materialize after the descent of Sheffield Wednesday to Division Two. After this he left the Saints in February 2004, signing for Barnsley as a free agent, after having been on loan for the last three months. He fought to settle at Oakwell, scoring a goal against Bristol City in the FA Cup, but he was never able to settle, after which he signed for Swansea City as a free agent in June 2004, where Monk has been captain of Swansea since 2006. He has played in the 4
divisions of English football with Swansea, winning in February 2013 the League Cup. A year later, in February 2014 after the dismissal of Michael Laudrup, Monk became a player-coach of Swansea.1 He was definitively confirmed as swan coach on May 7, 2014, after signing a contract for three years with the Welsh club, 2 leading the team to 8th place in the 2014-15 Premier League. On December 9, 2015, he was dismissed, after obtaining only one victory in the last 11 matches.
