Compare Wifi Wimax

A. Definition Wifi Wifi is short for Wireless Fidelity, which means set of standards used for Wireless Local Networks (Wireless Local Area Networks or WLANs) based on IEEE 802.11 specification. The latest standards of specifications 802.11a or b, such as 802.11g and 802.11n, the latest specification offers many improvements ranging from broad coverage further up the transfer speed. Wifi was originally intended for the use of wireless devices and Local Area Network (LAN), but now more widely used to access the Internet. It allows anyone with a computer and a wireless card (wireless card) or personal digital assistant (PDA) to connect to the internet using an access point (or known as hotspots) nearby. Technically operational, Wifi is one variant of communications and information technology that works on the network and device WLAN (wireless local area network).

G. Definition Wimax WiMAX stands for World wide Interoperability for Microwave Access which uses the standard IEEE 802.16, WiMAX is the development of Wi-Fi technology, where WiMAX is a broadband wireless technology (BWA "broadband wireless access") that have high-speed access with a wide coverage , 5 miles is the range of an average forecast for a standard WiMax tower signals, although some of the deployment trials showed possible coverage of nearly 30 miles over flat terrain. As a Wimax network telecommunications services limited to customers, and each tower supported by large infrastructure control access, speed, radio frequency

and data "backhaul" to the core network and the greater Internet. National WiMax network and multi-city can activate "roaming" in various locations. WiMAX is also an evolution of the previous BWA technology with features that are more attractive. Besides the high-speed data capable given, WiMAX is also a technology with open standards. In the sense of communication between several WiMAX devices of different vendors can still be done (not proprietary). With the large data rates (up to 70 MBps), WiMAX can be applied for broadband connection 'last mile', or backhaul.

H. Functions Wimax Functions of Wimax is to provide high-speed internet access and coverage range of a few kilometers radius. Theoretically, WiMAX provides for speeds around 70 Mbps with a range of 50 kilometers. WiMAX standard has the advantage that it allows a wireless connection between the base transceiver station (BTS) and thousands of customers without barrier or direct line of sight (LOS) to the station. This technology is called NLOS for non-line-of-sight. In reality, WiMAX can only pass a small obstacle like a tree or a house and can not cross hills or large buildings. When there is a barrier, the actual throughput might be under 20 Mbps.

I. How it works Wimax The main technologies are WiMax base transceiver station, a central antenna which communicates with an antenna customers. Where the term point-multipoint link is used for WiMAX communication method.

J. Type - the type of Wimax  Fixed WiMAX, also called IEEE 802.16-2004, provides for a fixed-line connection with an antenna mounted on the roof, like a TV antenna. Fixed WiMAX operates in the 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz frequency band, which require a license, and the license-free 5.8 GHz band.  Mobile WiMAX, also called IEEE 802.16e, allows mobile client machines to connect to the Internet. Mobile WiMAX opens the door for the use of mobile phones over IP, and even high-speed mobile services.

K. Advantages and Disadvantages WiMAX Network Advantages possessed by the Wimax network: 1) Range up to 50km with far reaching optimal range of 7-10 km, there is no problem of 'hidden node'. Because the PHY layer in IEEE 802.16d standard resistant to 10 multi-path delay spread. 2) The range optimized for outdoor powered with smart antenna technology, adaptive modulation and uses mesh network topology. 3) QoS for data services, video to support Grant / Request MAC and differential service: E1 / T1 for best effort data business customers for residential. 4) Interoperability dehingga device peyedia operator or service is not dependent on a single vendor for procurement of the device so that the costs and risks ivertasi may be lower or suppressed. 5) flexible channel bandwidth of 1.5 MHz to 20 MHz frequency spectrum for licensed and unlicensed frequency spectrum, frequency reuse and possible use by planning cell for the provision of commercial services.

Disadvantages owned by Wimax network: 1) required the determination of appropriate frequency range that benefits both operators, regulators and users. 2) infrastructure equipment prices are still very expensive 3) The technology is still evolving, so it could be one of the investment. 4) Too many types of devices that are not compatible with each other. 5) It takes experience to install the device.

L. difference Wifi With Wimax Actually perfomansi WiMAX is similar to WiFi that is, both use "hotspots" around the antenna or the environment in which we can access information with PDAs, laptops or other gadgets. The difference is in terms of the range radius. To Wifi can reach 100 feet, or about a radius of 30 meters, whereas WiMax has a range of 25-30 mile, or about 40-50 km (maximum of 50 Km). Wimax network broadcast a signal for long distances of outdoor tower, and relies on the computer infrastructure to authenticate subscribers and connect them to

the Internet. While Wifi providing Internet connectivity to users in a building or area is small and so out of the hotspot, the data connection is instant death. Wimax has the ability to bring data up to speeds of 75 megabits per second (Mbps), while the Wifi only 11 Mbps. Another advantage is the Wimax play at a fairly low frequency and width, ie 2-6 gigahertz (GHz). While Wifi 802.11b regulated in at 2.4 GHz and at 5 GHz 802.11a protocol. Basically Wifi and Wimax does not have many differences, but Wimax has several advantages over Wifi. Here are some differences Wifi and Wimax:  Coverage Area If Wifi only covers coverage area a few meters away, which can only cover internet access on only one building alone. Another case with Wimax, which has a wider coverage area coverage, which is about 50 km.  The standard used Wifi uses the IEEE 802.11 and ETSI HiperLAN while WiMmax uses the IEEE 802.16 and ETSI HiperMAN.

Differences Technology IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.16 Technology 1) Features WiMax has more features compared to WiFi, so that a BTS can serve more users to access the internet. 2) Frequency Wifi uses the 5 GHz frequency, while the frequency of 5.8 GHz WiMAX in addition to use, also use the 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz frequencies. 3) LoS (Line of Sight) Wimax standard to allow connections without requiring LoS, whereas no Wifi.

Another Wifi, Wimax other as well. Some applications can be achieved by utilizing Wimax is as follows: 1) Backhaul Applications For Wimax backhaul applications then can be used for WiMAX backhaul itself, backhaul backhaul Hotspot and other technologies.

2) Wimax Backhaul In the context of WiMAX as a backhaul of WiMAX applications similar to BTS as a repeater function that aims to extend the reach of the WiMAX. 3) Backhaul Hotspot In general, many hotspots using ADSL lines as its backhaul to connect to the internet connection. With the limitations of wired networks, the WiMAX can also be used as a backhaul hotspot. 4) Backhaul Other Technologies As other technology backhaul, WiMAX can be used for mobile backhaul. The following figure illustrates Wimax for connecting the MSC / BSC to a mobile BTS. 5) Broadband Access Wimax can be used as the "Last Mile" technology to serve the needs of broadband for customers. With more capabilities on the QoS (Quality of Service) hence WiMAX can be used to serve residential and business customers with a different service. 6) Personal Broadband Wimax as a service provider of personal broadband, can be divided into two market share which are nomadic and mobile. 

Nomadic For nomadic solution, it is usually the migration levels of user Wimax is not often, and even when moved in a low speed. Devices will usually not simple for mobile applications.

Mobile For mobile applications, the user Wimax like using a WiFi terminal such as a notebook, PDA or smartphone. Transfer / mobility rate equal to Wifi. The difference is that using Wimax Wimax then used the card installed in the terminal.
