Winder-Barrow High School Bands Fall 2016 – Syllabus Jerry Pharr, Director of Bands, [email protected] Advanced Band, Intermediate Band (10-12), Beginning Band (Freshman Band) MATERIALS USED 1. For all classes: instrument in good working order, using a suggested intermediate or advanced level mouthpiece, method books, handouts, pencils, paper, and band music featuring prominent composers of wind literature. The music will survey various styles, composers, and explore cultures. 2. A three ring binder. Page protectors are optional. Keep all music, handouts, and classroom exercises in this binder. 3. All students must purchase a concert uniform for formal concerts. More Info will be sent home later regarding fitting, pricing, etc. in advance of our first concert on September 26th. OBJECTIVES 1) To develop a greater appreciation for music. 2) To develop INDIVIDUAL performance growth specific to each instrument, with special attention to improving tone quality, articulation, intonation, phrasing, and other techniques. 3) To develop ENSEMBLE performance awareness of such musical ideas as balance, blend, tuning, melody, and harmony. 4) To develop an understanding of MUSIC HISTORY/THEORY and its many periods, styles, composers, and performers. 5) To develop discipline, responsibility, and teamwork concepts that will help to enrich our lives. Our goal at Winder Barrow High School is to promote the academic success of each student. Students are expected to take advantage of all opportunities for success, which are made available to them by all teachers.

RULES AND EXPECTATIONS 1. Students will be on time for class. The door will be locked when the tardy bell rings. Have a late note if entering after the bell. Your promptness to class will make our time together more productive. Be in your seat, ready to perform at the beginning of rehearsal. No student will be allowed to leave the classroom for any reason the first 15 minutes or the last 15 minutes of class. There will be official hall passes should you need to be excused. Abuse of this procedure will result in the reduction of these privileges. 2. Our class room schedule may differ each day. Various ensemble rehearsals may occur in the final 30 minutes of class. During times when your involvement is minimal or not at all, you are to remain in the band room and not disrupt rehearsals in progress. You may use this time for individual practice, pass-offs, or written quizzes. Failure to remain in the band room will result in an immediate administrative referral. 3. There are lockers/shelves to store your instrument and belongings. Refrain from leaving anything on the floor when a locker is available. Make sure you have a pencil, paper, and music at all times. 4. The director and school shall not be held responsible for lost or stolen articles. Please be cautious! Do not bring large amounts of money or valuable items into the band room. 5. The band room is not your locker. Cleaning of the band room occurs at the conclusion of each segment. We will discard any extraneous materials. If you want to retain your belongings take them with you. Anything on the floor will be discarded or placed in the lost/found area. 6. There should be no food or drinks in the band room. This includes gum and candy. Violations will result in those items being thrown away. No warnings. This is for the first offense. Water in a closed container is acceptable. 7. The director’s office and auxiliary rooms are off limits to all students unless permission is granted. 8. Play only your instrument or the instrument that has been checked out to you; never play someone else’s instrument, this includes percussion instruments and guard equipment. THIS MEANS YOU! 9. Those who use school owned instruments must pay a rental/usage fee of $25.00. This is due by Labor Day. This fee pays for maintenance and repair of these instruments. If you are in Marching Band, your one rental fee will cover both marching and concert instruments. Failure to pay these fees will result in a debt notice being sent to the WBHS administration.

GRADING Formative (Daily rehearsals, Individual Performance Evaluations, Quizzes, Written assignments) 70% Mid Term (Fall Concert and Written Exam) 10% September 26th Final Exam (Winter Concert and Written Exam) 20% December 6th The band will follow the final exam policy of WBHS and Barrow County Schools. A reflection of student progress should be evident every 2 weeks in Infinite Campus. Teachers, students and parents should be able to monitor student progress with evidence in through the parent portal. It is the responsibility of the teacher, student, and parent to discuss student progress. This communication should be collaborative and transparent.

ATTENDANCE The Winder-Barrow High School attendance policy will be enforced. See your student handbook/agenda for details. Students are allowed to make up any work missed. All make up work will be assigned by the director and will be similar in nature to the work missed. Students will have five school days in order to make up any work missed. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any work missed. If a student is present and fails to participate fully in class the daily rehearsal grade will be affected; in addition, this may result in being assigned a different part or suspension from a particular performance with no make-up work allowed. Failure to be seated at the designated start of a segment will affect the daily participation grade. DISCIPLINE It is the intent of this class to provide a positive experience through the playing of quality musical literature. However, it is necessary to have consequences for those students who are having difficulties participating well in a large group setting. These discipline problems will be dealt with in the most fair and expedient ways possible. Excessive reminders for off task behavior will result in conferences with the director, parent, or administrative conferences that may result in the removal from the large ensemble setting. Students are expected to adhere to the cell phone policy set forth by the school and classroom teacher. If a student does not adhere to the policy, the student will be referred to the discipline administrator for insubordination. Winder-Barrow High School is an active participant in the “Bring Your Own Technology” (BYOT) initiative. As such, students are encouraged to utilize their devices when deemed appropriate by the classroom teacher Students are expected to dress appropriately for school and without causing a disruption to the learning environment. If a student causes a distraction, that student will be placed in ISS unless/until he/she is able to correct the issue. In doing so a 2nd time, that student will be referred to the discipline administrator for insubordination.
