Message From the Principal

February 2018

Dear Parents, As we move into February, I want to take a moment to complement all the students, staff, and parents for all their hard work and support throughout the school year. Keeping communication open and clear between everyone is essential for the success of all students. Please follow Wauconda Middle School’s Twitter account at @WaucondaMS118 for current updates and for future announcements throughout the year. Wauconda Middle School will be having its February Conferences on Thursday, February 15th. Teachers will be contacting parents if they are in need of a conference to set up a time that works best for them to meet with the entire grade level team. These conferences should have parents and students in attendance. There will be a meeting for anyone interested in serving on the District 118 ParentTeacher Advisory Committee. The committee is seeking input concerning the student/parent handbook and bullying policy for each school in the district. Also, a review of the State Board of Education guidelines on the use of behavioral interventions for students eligible for special education will be included at the meeting. This is a collaborative effort of parents, teachers, and administrators. The meeting will take place on Thursday, March 8th, at 6:00 pm at the Wauconda Community Unit School District 118 Board Room. If you have any questions, please contact your building Principal. In April all students will be taking the PARCC test again. The testing period will be during the 1st two weeks of April. More information will come home from us as to the exact dates that your child will be testing. In May all students will take our spring NWEA MAP testing. The Illinois Learning Standards, emphasize critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Because of this, students will be asked to think critically and problem-solve on the test. As a parent, you can ask your child more open-ended questions throughout the day. Encourage your child to think critically in everyday life, such as when you are in the grocery store or while at the dinner table. Ask more “why” questions and let them know it is okay if they don’t know the answer right away. Problem-solving does take time. Wauconda Middle School is a Title I School. Title I provides federal funding to schools to help students who are low achieving or at most risk of falling behind. Title I is allocated to schools based on the percentage of students receiving free/reduced lunch. As always, we want to thank you for your support and partnership throughout the school year. If you have any questions or concerns please be sure to contact me at (847)526-2122 or email me at [email protected]. Sincerely, Daniel Stoller

_____ Peak, Paperback $7 After fourteen-year-old Peak Marcello is arrested for scaling a New York City skyscraper, he's left with two choices: wither away in Juvenile Detention or go live with his long-lost father, who runs a climbing company in Thailand. But Peak quickly learns that his father's renewed interest in him has strings attached. Big strings. As owner of Peak Expeditions, he wants his son to be the youngest person to reach the Everest summit--and his motives are selfish at best. Even so, for a climbing addict like Peak, tackling Everest is the challenge of a lifetime. But it's also one that could cost him his life.

_____ Above, Hardcover $14 Pat O'Toole and his brother, Coop, are on the run from an enemy that specializes in hiding in plain sight. Along with their new companion, Kate, they've narrowly escaped a cult like community situated beneath the streets of New York City. Kate has lived underground since birth, and the world above thrills her, but it's treacherous as well. With the cult's leader -- Kate's grandfather -- hatching a new scheme of global consequence, the three runaways may be the only ones who can stop him. Will they face him head-on, or will they spend the rest of their lives as fugitives?

_____ Beneath, Hardcover $14 Paperback $6 Pat O'Toole has always idolized his older brother, Coop. Coop is... different. He doesn't talk on the phone, doesn't use email, and doesn't have friends. He's never really cared for anything but the thrill of being underground, and for Pat of course. So it's no surprise to anyone that after a huge fight with their parents, Coop runs away. One year later, Pat receives a package containing a digital voice recorder and a cryptic message from his brother. He follows the clues to New York City and soon discovers that Coop has joined the Community, a society living beneath the streets. Now it's up to Pat to find his brother -- and bring him home.

_____ Storm Runners, Paperback $5 Chase Masters and his father are "storm runners," racing across the country in pursuit of hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. Anywhere bad weather strikes, they are not far behind. Chase is learning more on the road than he ever would just sitting in a classroom. But when the hurricane of the century hits, he will be tested in ways he never could have imagined.

_____ Chupacabra, Paperback $7 Strange experiments are taking place in the levels of laboratories beneath the Blackwood's Ark. Because if Noah Blackwood can't trap a cryptid, then he and his team of mad scientists just might have to create one. With Blackwood's henchman Butch McCall hot on the kids' heels and trouble at every turn, are Marty, Luther, and Grace on a collision course with a blood-sucking chupacabra?

Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and drinks enough fluids. If your child is 5 years and older and does not have other health problems and gets flu symptoms, including a fever and/or cough, consult your doctor as needed.

Can my child go to school, day care or camp if he or she is sick?

Children younger than 5 years of age – especially those younger than 2 years old – and children with certain chronic conditions, including asthma, diabetes and disorders of the brain or nervous system, are at high risk of serious flu-related complications. If your child is at high risk for flu complications, call your doctor or take them to the doctor right away if they develop flu symptoms.

When can my child go back to school after having the flu?

No. Your child should stay home to rest and to avoid giving the flu to other children or caregivers.

Keep your child home from school, day care or camp for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone. (The fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.) A fever is defined as 100°F (37.8°C) or higher.

What if my child seems very sick?

Influenza (the flu) is an infection of the nose, throat, and lungs caused by influenza viruses. There are many different influenza viruses that are constantly changing. Flu viruses cause illness, hospital

complications, like pneumonia.

How serious is the flu?

Flu illness can vary from mild to severe. While the flu can be serious even in people who are otherwise healthy, it can be especially dangerous for young children and children of any age who have certain longterm health conditions, including asthma (even mild or controlled), neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions, chronic lung disease, heart disease, blood disorders, endocrine disorders (such as diabetes), kidney, liver, and metabolic disorders, and weakened immune systems due to disease or medication. Children with these conditions and children who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy can have severe illness from the flu.

How does the flu spread?

Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might get the flu by touching something that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.

What are the symptoms of the flu?

Symptoms of the flu can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adults). Some people with the flu will not have a fever.

How long can a sick person spread the flu to others?

People with the flu may be able to infect others from 1 day before getting sick to 5 to 7 days after. However, children and people with weakened immune systems can infect others for longer periods of time, especially if they still have symptoms.

PROTECT YOUR CHILD How can I protect my child against the flu?

To protect against the flu, the first and most important thing you can do is to get a flu vaccine for yourself and your child.  Vaccination is recommended for everyone

6 months and older.

 It’s especially important that young

children and children with long-term health conditions get vaccinated. (See list of conditions in “How serious is the flu?”)

 Caregivers of children with health conditions

or of children younger than 6 months old should get vaccinated. (Babies younger than 6 months are too young to be vaccinated themselves.)

 Another way to protect babies is to vaccinate

pregnant women. Research shows that flu vaccination gives some protection to the baby both while the woman is pregnant and for several months after the baby is born.

Flu vaccine is updated annually to protect against the flu viruses that research indicates are most likely to cause illness during the upcoming flu season. Flu vaccines are made using strict safety and production measures. Over the years, millions of flu vaccines have been given in the United States with a very good safety record.

Is there a medicine to treat the flu?

Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines that can be used to treat influenza illness. They can make people feel better and get better sooner. Antivirals can mean the difference between having milder illness instead of very serious illness that could result in a hospital stay. Antiviral drugs are different from antibiotics, which fight against bacterial infections. They work best when started during the first 2 days

of illness. It’s very important that antiviral drugs are used early to treat the flu in people who are very sick (for example, people who are in the hospital) or who are at high risk of serious flu complications. Other people with flu illness may also benefit from taking antiviral drugs. These drugs can be given to children and pregnant women.

What are some of the other ways I can protect my child against the flu? In addition to getting vaccinated, you and your children can take everyday steps to help prevent the spread of germs: These include the following:  Stay away from people who are sick.  If your child is sick with flu illness, try to

keep him or her in a separate room from others in the household, if possible.

 CDC recommends that your sick child stay

home for at least 24 hours after his or her fever is gone, except to get medical care or for other necessities. The fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.

 Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue

when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after it has been used.

 Wash hands often with soap and water. If

soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

 Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. Clean and

disinfect hard surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs, including bathroom surfaces, kitchen counters and toys for children. Clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant according to directions on the product label.

These everyday steps are a good way to reduce your chances of getting sick. However, a yearly flu vaccine is the best protection against flu illness.

Si no

Emergency Early Dismissal Procedures Due to Severe Winter Weather Dear Parents: In the event of severe winter weather occurring during the school day, it may be necessary to dismiss the students housed at Wauconda Middle School, Matthews Middle School and Wauconda High School earlier than usual. The reason this action would be taken is to allow the buses an opportunity to drop off these older students in order to return in time to take the younger elementary students at Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown School and Cotton Creek School home according to their regular dismissal schedule. If this early dismissal was not done, we would run the risk of buses being unable to return the Wauconda Grade School, Robert Crown and Cotton Creek students to their homes, or very late drop off for these same students. In addition, we hope to avoid buses driving in a snowstorm when it is dark. Parents of students in grades six through twelve need to be aware of the possibility that this situation could occur due to inclement winter weather. If it does, we would enact the Bright Arrow Emergency Alert Service in an attempt to notify you that your sixth through twelfth grade student was coming home early. As a result, we ask that you make appropriate arrangements with your sixth through twelfth grade student in order for them to gain access to shelter after being dismissed early due to weather conditions. This type of situation does not occur often, but if it does we wanted you to be informed of our actions so that you and your students can be prepared. Thank you for your cooperation. Sincerely, Dr. Daniel J. Coles Superintendent of Schools

Procedimientos de Emergencia de Despido Temprano Debido a Severo Clima de Invierno

Estimados Padres:
