It’s Testing Time! This is the time of year when Orient-Macksburg students and staff are highly involved in testing to assess students’ skills and growth in reading, math, science, and other areas. Each year in January, 7-12 students complete semester tests. By the end of February students in grades 3 rd-11th take the MAP assessments and the Iowa Assessments. K-2 students complete the mid-year Aims Web Plus tests. This article will provide you with information about these assessments, including what they measure and how the different types of data from the assessments are used.

MAP tests: MAP is an acronym for Measures of Academic Progress. Students take tests in Reading, Language Use, Math, and Science. MAP test scores are reported as RIT scores. RIT stands for Rausch Interval Unit. RIT scores compare scores from thousands of children at the same grade level and a mean (average) score is calculated for each grade level, along with above and below average benchmarks. This data helps to monitor students’ growth in these core areas and to determine if they are performing at, above, or below the expected benchmarks. Iowa Assessments: These tests used to be called the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) and the Iowa Tests of Educational Development (ITED), and you probably remember taking them when you were in school. Students are tested on reading, language, mathematics, science, and social studies. Scores are “normed”, which means reported in percentiles that compare your child’s score to all other children in the same grade level across the U.S. If your child scores at the 45th percentile, this means he/she scored better than 45% of all the students at that grade level who took the tests. Students also receive a National Standard Score (NSS), which helps to track students’ growth from year to year. Aims Web Plus: This is a formative assessment which is designed to screen K-2 students and monitor their performance on foundational skills in reading and math. Data is used to identify at-risk students early, to monitor progress, and to differentiate instruction. This assessment is given three times a year. How is the data from these assessments used? Teachers regularly review the data from each of these assessments. They compare students’ prior scores to monitor growth and determine which students are in need of additional support or enrichment. Students who score below the expected level, or benchmarks, are provided with supplemental instruction and practice. Students who indicate that they are well above the benchmarks are provided with enrichment activities or advanced instruction. Parents can help their children to show their true skill levels by: 1) encouraging students to “do their best” on all assessments, 2) having children go to bed at an appropriate bedtime each night, and 3) making sure children get in the habit of eating a healthy breakfast. If you have any questions or would like more information about these assessments, please contact Dr. Bunt or Mrs. Thompson at (641) 337-5061,
