Year 2 Term 1 2017 Curriculum Newsletter Dear Parents, Welcome, we look forward to an exciting year working in partnership with you and your children. In Religious Education the students will explore and learn about Images of God and Lent and Holy Week. The RE textbook, ‘To Know, Worship and Love,’ will be sent home for you to share in the journey of your child’s religious education. Year Two will have three teachers for Mathematics which will ensure each child will be supported in their individual needs across all strands, which, in line with the syllabus are- Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability. Mrs Dickings will be engaged in the teaching of English 4 mornings a week. Students will develop and consolidate reading strategies, comprehension of texts, sentence structure and grammatical knowledge through guided, shared and modelled reading. They will develop writing skills within groups focusing on modelled, guided and independent writing. Speaking and listening will be incorporated within the classroom environment. Library borrowing will be on Mondays. In the Science unit ’Water In Our World’, students will discover various aspects of water in our world and deepen their understanding of the importance of this precious resource. In the History unit, ‘The Way We Were’, students will look at how changes in toys, technology, games and books have shaped our lives today. Computers will be integrated within the classroom learning environment and research skills will be enhanced. Homework will be sent out from Monday, Week 4. The students will be given an outline of tasks to complete for the week each Monday. A homework book will be given for work to be completed in and the tasks will be outlined and explained in class, an instructional sheet will be glued into their books. In Year 2, we recommend 20 minutes per night (including 10 minutes of reading). Home readers will commence Monday, Week 4. Children will pick 4 books for the week each Monday. Please record your child’s reading in their diary. We will be collecting homework each Friday, if you have any trouble with homework, please let your child’s teacher know. Sport will be on Mondays and Thursdays with Mr. Kennedy, Weeks 1 - 5 incorporating Tee-Ball skills, and Weeks 6 - 10 Gymnastics. We will start off the year revising our schoolwide PBL expectations and in Personal Development we will focus on the children getting along with one another. In Visual Art lessons with Miss Katralis on Wednesdays, students will be using and exploring a variety of mediums to create artworks based on various artists and develop pieces of work linked to the history unit and special events. Please do not hesitate to contact us through your child’s diary if you have any queries or concerns. Please remember to send in a written explanation that can be kept on file for any absences throughout the year. For extended leave you will need to apply at the office.
