Year 6 Term 2 Curriculum Letter Term 2, 2017 Key Events this term -Confirmation Parent Information Night: Tuesday 16th May 7:00pm in OLSH Church. Please bring: Sponsor‟s full name (Catholic and over 16) , your child‟s confirmation (Saint) name (if known), and Baptismal details to fill in on the night (date and place of Baptism). Presentation Masses: 20th and 21st of May 6pm Sat or Sun 8am, 10am, Midday or 6pm Mass (you are asked to attend one of these parish masses with your child, and they will be presented to the Parish community) Confirmation Retreat Day: Thursday 1st June 9am-11am -Personal Development Parent Talk: 23rd May at 7:00pm Personal Development Student Talk: 24th of May Sacrament of Confirmation Mass: 15th June OLSH church Athletics Carnival: 2nd June Religious Education Test: 14th June Homework The majority of homework can be accessed on the Google Classroom. The students will continue to record homework and important events in their diary. The diary will be used as a regular form of communication. A board game will be created at home by the students to help them study for the Religion Test. Religious Education The units covered this term will be: 6.3 Easter: This unit explores the disciples‟ experience of the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus. We will be discussing what the Church believes to be everlasting life and identifying images that help in the understanding of these events. 6.4 Confirmation: Celebrating the Gift of the Holy Spirit It explores the Sacrament of Confirmation; the symbols and rituals, the liturgical structure and theology. This unit will run in conjunction with the home groups as a preparation for students participating in Confirmation. Mathematics Teachers will continue working as a team to ensure that each child‟s individual needs are met through our mathematics program. Working Mathematically is embedded in the substrands of number, measurement and geometry and statistics and probability. Students are expected to take marked assessments home and bring them back signed by parents. Students are
encouraged to review past assessments, ask for clarification and can attempt the task again to ensure thorough understanding. English We aim to promote a love of English, literature and learning. Students develop the ability to interpret and critically analyse texts through modelled, shared, guided and independent reading. Students develop the ability to write sustained texts for a wide range of purposes through modelled, shared, guided and independent writing. Students will have a variety of speaking and listening opportunities that are integrated into each English lesson. We will be studying texts including „The Littlest Refugee‟ and the perspective from which the events in the story are observed and recounted. Students will examine how a composer can raise awareness of the issue of refugees and persuade the viewer to take action. History Our History unit is aligned to the new syllabus and looks at the following key questions: ● Who were the people who came to Australia? Why did they come? ● What contribution have significant individuals and groups made to the development of Australian society? Science In Science we will be completing our work with Electricity. We are thankful to have a guest volunteer expert, Mark England (an IT Professional) work with the students, helping them design their own robots, developing coding skills, where the students will learn how to create code to program robots to move and change direction. PDHPE Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL): We will continue revising the important rules for the classroom and the expected behaviours on the different playgrounds through our PBL lessons. Students will be reminded of ways to Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible and to Be a Learner. Year 6 students will be asked to model and monitor these behaviours with the younger children in the school. Major topics are Self-Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and Social Decision Making. There will also be a Personal Development night for parents and students (see key dates), and this will be followed up with a student course the next day. The focus for Physical Education for the term will be Athletics and Gymnastics. Sport uniforms are to be worn on Monday and Friday
Creative Arts Art This term Art will be integrated with the History unit „Australia : A GLobal Nation‟. Students will be creating a poster welcoming people to Australia, using a variety of mediums and techniques to convey their message. Music The teaching and learning in music this term follows “Music Express Program”. The students will engage in the Unit called “Roundabout - exploring rounds.” The children will be able to: ● Display an understanding of chords ●
Able to describe the sound produced by a particular chord.
●
Able to record one's composition of chord using musical notations.
The musical concepts which will be covered are:Pitch, Toner Colour and Structure. Year 6 Teachers Ms Maher, Mr. Antico and Mrs Pengly
