Manager of Youth Settlement Services Contract – Full-Time (35 hours per week) $34,000 May 14, 2010 @ 4:00 pm
For Youth Initiative (FYI) is a by-youth-for-youth, charitable organization, that works primarily in the former City of York and West end of Toronto. FYI has an Immigrant Settlement and Adaptation Program (ISAP). The program aims to provide settlement and engagement services for newcomer youth who may be facing settlement, adjustment, mental health, and housing issues. These services will be delivered through peer mentorship, life skills training and solution-focused short-term case management. As the Youth Settlement Worker, you will be working with newcomer youth from diverse communities. You are responsible for engaging and developing a plan of action with young newcomers to support their settlement in Toronto. In this role, you will have an intense focus on building the independence and leadership capacity of newcomer youth through increased opportunities to mentorship, education, employment, civic engagement, and increased self-awareness as a new community member. In addition, you will take part in newcomer specific initiatives and events related to youth leadership, engagement, employment, act as an advocate on behalf of the young people you work with, and play a lead role in expanding FYI’s new settlement services in the broader community.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Conduct intake interviews to determine necessary supports required in the areas of settlement Provide case management services to newcomer youth Provide supports for newcomer youth in the areas of form filling, translation and interpretation, and advocacy in the areas of accessing employment and schooling Be able to provide referrals to other necessary services and programs, through being well connected within the areas of youth settlement Participate in the planning, development, and facilitation of local community youth engagement, leadership, and employment initiatives Provide brief solution-focused counselling to youth encountering difficulties in adjusting to life in Canada and support them in resolving these difficulties Perform outreach in a variety of community settings, including but not limited to: streets, schools, residences, community fairs, and other local settings Offer mentorship to newcomer youth and groups of youth through supporting the development of transferable life skills and opportunities for peer leadership Complete detailed monthly written reports Develop monthly workplans, maintain statistics, and accurately record activities and outcomes Participate in monthly FYI staff meetings, program meetings, trainings and professional development, and other special events and fundraising events throughout the year Perform other administrative and program - related tasks relative to the position as required Adherence, in all aspects of work, to FYI’s mandate, mission, and strategic future directions

Qualifications/Interests We are seeking a dynamic, committed young person with:
Experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating newcomer programs and services A passion for working with youth from an anti-oppressive and anti-racist framework In-depth understanding of challenges facing youth from ethnically diverse communities Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills Experience in working with confidential and vulnerable information Experience in workshop facilitation, leading peer groups, and providing youth with mentorship Creative programming ideas and experience with bringing diverse groups of youth together Experience with grassroots outreach methods and models of youth recruitment Ability to work late afternoon and evening hours as required for youth programming Knowledge of resume and cover letter writing, and transferable employment skills Good organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines Ability to manage program budgets and materials, and develop program resources Familiar with the case management process, including intake, referral, and follow-ups Fluent verbal and written communication these languages: English, Vietnamese and/ or Tagalog Ability to adhere to and enforce FYI`s mission, policies and guiding principles
