Purpose: A. To outline the expectations regarding employee appearance and dress during work hours or at any time the employee is acting as a representative of the Appalachian District Health Department. B. To promote and assure professionalism, security and safety while the health department employee performs her/his duties and functions within the health department and the community. C. To prevent contamination and exposure to blood borne pathogens. Policy: Staff will represent Appalachian District Health Department by dressing in a professional manner as outlined in procedure. Procedure: 1. Appropriate attire is described as: no blue jeans, shorts, excessive short skirts or dresses defined as more than two inches above the knee, leggings, tight fitting stirrups, T-shirts, or sweat suits. Appropriate attire is expected for all staff when representing the agency inside or outside the district at all times. 2. Nametags, provided by the Department, must be visible at all times. Clinical staff nametags will reflect professional/technical certification or discipline. 3. All garments are to be neat, clean, correctly sized, pressed (wrinkle free), and in good repair. Clothing should not expose bare abdomen, back or display cleavage. Undergarments must not be visible. 4. Supervisors have the authority to deem attire inappropriate and not in compliance with policy and shall address promptly as necessary. 5. Additional Guidance: a. Environmental Health: Staff may wear jeans with sports shirt when performing field activities defined as onsite waste water or well program activities, this does not include Food and Lodging and Institution activities. Cloth shoes, sandals or open-toed shoes are not permitted. b. Clinical staff: Nursing staff are encouraged to wear navy and white or appropriate attire with lab coat. Scrub uniforms are also considered appropriate attire for clinical staff. Jewelry should be appropriate for clinical areas. Cloth shoes, sandals or open-toed shoes are not permitted for staff providing direct patient care. Infection control guidelines will be practiced per policy. 1|Personnel Policies – Dress Code
