Demolition of old bus barn and home economics building to conclude Dec. 19
This is the west end of the 1935 Battle Ground School District bus barn and home economics building after one day of demolition. The center portion still standing was to come down Wednesday, Dec. 19.
The center section of the old and long-vacant Battle Ground School District bus barn and home economics building was all that remained standing after Day 1 of the structure’s demolition Dec. 18. 3 Kings Environmental Inc. of Battle Ground, contractor on the job, was to be back at the Main Street site in downtown Battle Ground early Wednesday, Dec. 19, to knock down the three-story center portion of the 77-year-old brick-and-lumber building. Tuesday, the 3 Kings crew flattened the two-story sections at either end of
the 1935 building, starting at the east with the first bite into the roof at 8:07 a.m. The dinosaur-like excavator remained on school district property as it worked Tuesday. As a precaution, westbound traffic on Main Street was funneled into one of the eastbound lanes. Setback regulations must have been rather lax in 1935 -- or Main Street has been widened considerably on its north side. The building’s south wall is just the width of the sidewalk from the street. Wednesday, the company was to move the excavator, with its “clam” attachment, into the street itself to finish the demolition. This is the third vacant and unused Battle Ground School District building razed in 2012. In January, the old Central School on Parkway Avenue in downtown Battle Ground was burned in a fire-fighter-training exercise, thus saving on demolition expenses. The same fate awaited the old, vacant Amboy Middle School in June. -0MEDIA: The Battle Ground School District Communications Dept. will be unstaffed Dec. 19 to Jan. 2. To confirm completion of the demolition project, you might drive by the site or call 3 Kings Environmental Inc. at (360) 666-5464. (Or maybe call BurgerVille or Chase Bank and ask an employee to look out the window and tell you if the building is entirely down.) – Gregg Herrington
