Maryland Public Information Act Request regarding lead problem in PGCPS Schools Our File No.: 16-99-0033
Dear Ms. Scarato: This letter is written to provide answers, which are embedded with your questions below, to your request for the following additional information regarding lead remediation efforts: I would like to know: What efforts are in place to remediate the 88 schools with faucets turned off because of lead in water? PGCPS is currently reviewing a request for a proposal to repair or replace the fixtures that were found to contain lead. What action level is being used? 15 ppm or 20 ppm? PGCPS is currently following the EPA guidelines for lead in water and using the action level of 15 ppb. Are children being given clean water? If so, please describe the exact policy in place in these schools specifically. water bottles? how many a class? how often? All students and staff in the buildings where drinking fountains measured higher than the EPA action levels are being provided bottled water and drinking cups. Bottled water stations are randomly placed in the hallways so that the students have easy access. Are water fountains taped off? The water fountains that have been taken out of service are not taped off. They have been valved off and are inoperable. Will water sources be retested now in 2016? Please respond with specific school and plans. Drinking water sources will be retested after remediation efforts have taken place. I was reviewing some tests and for Ardmore the water was tested and retested. Is the water system flushed first? For the November tests, was the water system flushed before these levels were found? Ardmore’s fixtures were flushed before testing was performed. Ardmore has and continues to receive bottled water. If other plans are in place to fix this health and safety issue please send me a description and timeline. As we move into Phase IV of our mediation plan, PGCPS is currently reviewing a request for a proposal to repair or replace the fixtures that were found to contain lead. Why wasn't all the??? Phase I tested potable sources, which would have been a smaller sample. However, all sources where tested in Phase 3. If you have further questions regarding this response, please contact this office. Very truly yours,
