Consistent with our founding, we always seek to make our products safer for end users. We revise our labels regularly to lead industry best-practices and provide clear warnings and usage guidance. The main safety concern when working with products containing methylene chloride is they be used in well-ventilated areas. More recently, it came to our attention that some people were using the product to strip and refinish bathtubs. The small size of a bathroom and shape of a bathtub concentrate vapors and present significant safety hazards. For this reason, we recently added both a written warning and a prominent visual icon to the front of our label, so consumers would immediately know that paint strippers are not intended to strip bathtubs and such use can lead to death. Over the last couple of years, we worked very closely with the CPSC and industry associations to update labeling standards for the category as a whole. The result was new CPSC guidelines, published just this week, and is an important step forward. Recognizing “there are few suitable alternatives to DCM [Methylene Chloride],” the CPSC “determined it imperative to publish guidelines for warning labels under the FHSA.” We’re pleased to see our work with the CPSC lead to safer industry practices, and we’re proud to continue our legacy of purposeful innovation and commitment to safety.
