Clinic Descriptions: Clinic Cycle #1: Marching Percussion “Rudimental Tenor Drumming” Paul Weber, clinician Paul will be presenting a clinic at the 2011 Minnesota Day of Percussion focusing on multi-tenor approach and techniques. This clinic will be geared for students at all levels and will involve hands-on participation. “Marching Cymbals” David von Behren, clinician This clinic will dive into the realm of marching cymbals, discussing the role of a cymbal player within the contemporary drumline, as well as the basics of sound creation, holding the cymbals, and cymbal flips. “Triangle and Square: An Exercise in Agility and Coordination” Casey Cangelosi, clinician Several exercises aimed at increasing a musician’s sense of rhythm, timing, and polymetric awareness will be presented. We will explore a methodology in musical multi-tasking and what you, as a musician, can do to improve your own coordination and agility. “Rudimental Bass Drumming” Patrick Lyons, clinician Patrick will be presenting a clinic at the 2011 Minnesota Day of Percussion focusing on marching bass drum approach and techniques. This clinic will be geared for students at all levels and will involve live demonstration and a video presentation. “4x4x4 = Drumming for Life” Jeff Queen, clinician This clinic will cover the 4 basic strokes (full, down, tap, and up) 4 note groupings (1, 2, 3, 4) notes per hand and how to apply those to the 4 main skill sets in drumming (single-height, timing, multiple-heights, diddles, and flams). Make sure you bring your drum sticks and pads to play along! Clinic Cycle #2: Concert Percussion “Drumset Grooves: From Tower of Power to DJ Shadow” Andrew Dussl, clinician Learn how to build a more complex groove by dissecting some of the most popular drum break samples in history. We’ll follow the fundamentals of funk into modern genres such as Hip-Hop, Drum and Bass, Jungle and Dubstep. “Tambourine and Triangle: More than Meets the Eye” Erik Barsness, clinician

4

This clinic will discuss general playing techniques for tambourine and triangle and break down some of the stereotypes of playing small auxiliary percussion. “Advanced Marimba Technique” Casey Cangelosi, clinician The technical boundaries of the marimba are yet to be established and may have no end in sight! This clinic will discuss some approaches to the growing technical demand of the modern marimba repertoire. Come prepared to share your thoughts on marimba grips, technique, and practice methods. “Timpani Playing: Developing your Sound, and Performing with Electronics” Adam Rappel, clinician This clinic will discuss the mechanics of timpani as it relates to technique (grip, stroke, crossings, stickings) and to tuning (what pitches belong on which drums, use of gauges, hearing parts in the ensemble). “Timpani Playing: Developing your Sound, and Performing with Electronics” will also include a live performance of Jeffrey Peyton’s “The Final Precipice” for timpani and tape, performed by clinician Adam Rappel. Clinic Cycle #3: Non-Western Percussion “The Afro-Toolkit for Drumset Players” Andrew Dussl, clinician This clinic will introduce Afro-drumming such as Jazz, Samba, Bassa Nova, Mambo and ChaCha by identifying the basic grooves and their differences in order to diversify your drumming portfolio. “Brazilian Instruments and Grooves” Pat and Tim O’Keefe, clinicians Pat and Tim O'Keefe, founders of the Twin Cities's own Brazilian drum group Batucada do Norte (Drum Group of the North, ww.batucadadonorte.com) will be demonstrating many different types of Brazilian percussion instruments, including pandeiro, tamborim, cuica, surdo, caixa, repinique, timbau, agogo, chocalho, and alfaia. They will also be discussing and playing some of the important rhythms heard in the streets of Brazil during carnival time, such as samba, afoxe, and maracatu. This will be a hands-on class, and they will be bringing plenty of instruments along for everyone to try. “Practicing from an Analytical and Formal Perspective” Casey Cangelosi, clinician

5

Students will be engaged in a practical discussion into the use of theory and analysis when learning a new piece of music. What makes a piece work? How is it that some note perfect performances yield emotionless results? Join us in dissecting musical examples to find out “what makes them tick” and how you, as a performer, can amplify your performances from a formal standpoint. “Conga Playing: Developing sound, independence and knowledge” Adam Rappel, clinician This clinic will provide participants with an overview of conga techniques, set-ups, and patterns used by traditional congueros. Participants will also learn about the use of clave (3:2, 2:3, son, rumba, and 6/8) and cascara and how each should be interpreted when playing congas. “West African Drum and Dance with Hip Hop” Voice of Culture, clinicians In West African cultures, drumming and dance are inseparable. Ms. Kenna leads this workshop using traditional instruments like Sabar, Tama, Djembe, Djundjun, Sangba and Kenkeni to explore rhythms from Guinea, Mali, and Senegal. Senegalese Griot Backa Niang will teach drummers poly-rhythmic parts to beats like Didadi, Sofa, and M'Balakh. Voice of Culture company members Deja Stowers, Jasmine Harris and Ashley Akpaka will demonstrate and teach the accompanying dances to each rhythm. Beat-boxer and spoken word artist TruthMaze will be on hand to provide the Hip Hop fusion that is a signature of Voice of Culture's performance style. Founding VoC members Kinyari and Selema Al-Ahad support the participants with exemplary drumming and dancing. The workshop will require physicality and movement. Participants should be prepared to use hand drums for this clinic. Batucada do Norte Batucada do Norte (Drum Group of the North) was founded in 2006 by brothers Tim and Pat O’Keefe. Both highly trained musicians with expertise in many different styles, including a true passion for world music, they have been studying the music of Brazil for many years. With Batucada do Norte (BdN) they set out to create a drum group fashioned after the large baterias (percussion sections) of the great samba schools of Rio de Janeiro. The group is proud to be mentored by both Mestre Jorge Alabe (master samba percussionist from Rio de Janeiro and San Francisco) and Scott Kettner (the leading American expert on maracatu). While their music is strongly rooted in a variety of Afro-Brazilian drumming traditions, they bring in many other influences as well, including elements from North America, the Caribbean, Africa, and the Middle East. David von Behren: David von Behren, originally a French horn player, has performed in the DCI circuit for the past seven years starting his marching career in 2002 with The Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps from Milwaukee, WI, and continuing two more seasons with the corps in 2003 and 2004 before performing with The Magic Drum and Bugle Corps from Orlando, FL, in 2006 as well as The Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps in 2005; 2007 and aging out in the 2008 cymbal line as one of the rare few members of The Madison Scouts to have performed in both brass and percussion sections. Within that process David also performed in the WGI circuit performing as a cymbalist for the inaugural Pioneer Indoor Drumline in 2007 while winning WGI PIA Championships. In 2008, David moved to Sacramento, CA, performing with The Freelancers, northern California’s premier indoor drumline under the direction of pristine educators such as Roger Carter, Jaime Holly, Rudy Garcia, Don Silva and Vince Oliver. In 2009, David performed and aged out with Music City Mystique based in Nashville Tennessee, which holds the record for the most WGI World Championships in WGI Percussion history. Furthermore, David has mastered the "art" of what a cymbal can do and has continued to help young adults achieve greatness through cymbal playing. Casey Cangelosi Casey Cangelosi is a rising composer and percussionist in the contemporary music world. With his performances and compositions spreading wildly, Cangelosi is constantly gathering international acclaim. Casey has been named, "The Paganini of percussion!”, his technique has been called, “Ridiculous…a stunning command of the marimba”, his compositions hailed as, “Imposing and exhilarating”, and deemed by the Classical Marimba League, “Cangelosi is a marimbist of magisterial power, and insight”. He has won numerous performance awards from both state and private institutions, numerous awards from the Percussive Arts Society, and composition awards from the PAS Massachusetts Chapter, Sam Houston State University, and the Classical Marimba league. Casey is a MTNA National Young Artist. With his music in high demand and the contemporary
