OVERVIEW OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DEFINITION: Pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship • Used to gain or maintain power and control over intimate partner • Can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological • Includes actions and threats (DOJ OVW, CDC, WHO)
NATIONALLY: Between 1/4 and 1/3 of U.S. women report being physically or sexually abused by a partner (CDC NISVS 2010)
ORANGE COUNTY: 26% of women have experienced physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner since age 18 (CHIS 2009)

HDV TASK FORCE PRIORITIES
SYSTEMS GAPS: Between healthcare sector and shelter, social, legal, law enforcement and other services (many already coordinated) that support DV victims and their families in OC
SCREENING GAPS: Local hospitals and community health centers not consistently screening or counseling for DV
OPPORTUNITIES: • ACA covers screening and counseling for DV • California residents want their healthcare providers to ask about DV (BSCF Survey 2014)

FINDINGS OF HDV NEEDS ASSESSMENT AWARENESS AND EDUCATION:
ENGAGEMENT AND SCREENING:
• Increase provider and public awareness of DV as health priority • Create training opportunities • Overcome cultural norm of fear/shame
• Equip providers with training, tools to engage clients/ patients about DV • Encourage HCP to screen for DV and DV providers to screen for health issues
REFERRALS: • Maintain updated list of resources and facilitate warm hand-offs • Reduce barriers to access • Build capacity for mental health and substance abuse services for DV victims
