Ethical Investment Group Groupe d’investissement éthique 10 March 2015 Dan Lefaivre, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Stantec 200, 10160 – 112 Street Edmonton AB T5K 2L6 Dear Mr Lefaivre, I am writing to you on behalf of the Ethical Investment Group (EIG), a socially responsible investment club based in Montreal. EIG has been a shareholder in Stantec for over 10 years. As none of your public documents appear to contain any reference to a senior executive officer responsible for investor relations, we are addressing this letter to you. If you are not the right person, please forward our letter as appropriate. Also, please distribute a copy of this letter to the Chair of the Board of Directors, as indicated in “cc” below. Our members have been concerned in recent months about Stantec’s increasing involvement and role in facilitating tar sands oil exploitation and growth as well as in promoting the various controversial pipeline projects. For example, our research has found that Stantec in one way or another has been involved with pipeline projects such as Keystone XL, Northern Gateway, Energy East and Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Expansion. As well, Stantec appears to have worked with companies like Suncor in relation to their tar sands investments. Our members would like to get a clearer idea as to the extent of Stantec’s involvement in these projects and the actual role(s) Stantec may be playing as pertains to these projects. We would therefore appreciate a response from you to a number of questions we have been discussing: (1) What percentage of Stantec’s 2014 revenues derive from its Oil and Gas Sector activities, and in particular, how much of this comes from projects related to the facilitation of tar sands oil exploitation and growth (e.g. on-site facilities/infrastructure, pipelines to transport tar sands oil, feasibility studies, etc.) (2) What role or roles does Stantec play in these projects: environmental consultant, design engineering, building contractor and construction, investor, promoter or other? (if multiple roles, please provide approximate % breakdown by role and project.) (3) Can Stantec categorically state that it has not engaged in lobbying (either directly or contractually) to influence government and regulatory decision-makers? If not, please describe the extent of your activities. (4) Can Stantec categorically state that it has not engaged or financed public or community relations programs in support of tar sands related projects (including pipelines)? If not, please describe the extent of your activities.
