I am honored that Boston continues to lead the way in environmental stewardship and climate action. Home to the oldest city park, one of the most successful harbor clean-ups, and the first green building zoning code in the U.S., Boston is world renowned for its sustainability efforts. In recent years, Boston has proven itself as a national and global leader in climate action. The Greenovate Boston 2014 Climate Action Plan ensures that we are making measurable progress toward reaching our greenhouse gas reduction goals, making our homes and businesses more energy efficient, increasing safer streets for all, cultivating a booming green-tech and green-collar job market, and most importantly, preparing for the impacts of climate change. COMMUNITY SUMMIT 2015 Dean Cycon
Founder & CEO Dean’s Beans Dean Cycon is the Founder and CEO of Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee Company, a certified organic, fair trade, direct and kosher coffee importing/roasting operation in Orange, Massachusetts, USA. Dean has over thirty years of development work and activism in indigenous communities, including coffee villages, in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Dean is a co-founder of Coffee Kids (non-profit development group), and of Cooperative Coffees, the world’s first fair trade roaster’s cooperative. Dean has been a Woods Hole Research Fellow, Ella Baker Social Justice Fellow, Senior Fulbright Scholar, and a Yale Law School Visiting Fellow. He created Dean’s Beans in 1993 to prove that business can promote positive economic, social and environmental change at the Global South source, and be profitable at the same time. The company designs and funds innovative people-centered development projects in each community it buys from in partnership with the growers that address development challenges identified by the coffee communities. The company has received a Best Practices Recognition from UNFAO, the 2004 Sustainability Award from the Specialty Coffee Association of America, 2013 UN Women’s Community Development Award, 2013 Oslo Business for Peace Award (“Nobel Prize for Business”), 2015 Fifty Top Social Innovators Award and other recognitions for the success and innovations of its social business model.

Andy Brooks
Founder & CEO Bootstrap Compost Andy Brooks is the president and founder of Bootstrap Compost, Inc., a food scrap pickup service operating throughout Greater Boston. Born and reared in Arizona, Brooks moved to Massachusetts in 1993 to attend Boston University, where he studied sociology with a focus on cities and ethnicity. After graduation, Brooks worked as a mental health case manager before securing a job with Harvard University as a sports reporter. After eight years providing content for harvard.edu, Brooks decamped from Cambridge to pursue freelance writing, music performance, and professional cooking. After learning about community composting efforts in Vermont, Brooks launched Bootstrap Compost on New Year’s Day of 2011 in hopes of creating a reliable business dedicated to helping Bostonians transform their organic waste into quality finished compost. Initially, Brooks picked up organics by handtruck via the T, before graduating to a bike and trailer and ultimately, four company vehicles. Over the past 53 months, Bootstrap has enrolled 1,250 commercial and residential accounts, amounting to approximately .80 new subscribers per day, while diverting more than 800,000 pounds of food scraps from landfills. Brooks lives in Jamaica Plain with his two cats and girlfriend, Erin.

COMMUNITY SUMMIT 2015 Robert Gittens
Vice President of Public Affairs Northeastern University Mr. Gittens joined Northeastern University as the Vice President for Public Affairs in March of 2003. In his current capacity, he represents Northeastern University and its president, Joseph Aoun, with a variety of citywide partnerships and organizations such as the City of Boston’s Success Boston Initiative, the Boston Private Industry Council and The Fenway Alliance. He develops and supports partnership opportunities between Northeastern and city and community organizations designed to promote education, health and wellness. He oversees Northeastern’s Youth Development Initiative Project, which engages local neighborhood youth and their families in a comprehensive academic and social skills development program designed to prepare the youth for admission to college. He also works on a variety of government relations and community affairs initiatives related to the development and implementation of the University’s Master Plan. Mr. Gittens serves on the boards of a number of non-profit organizations, including the Boston Municipal Research Bureau, Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education, Mathpower, George Lewis Ruffin Society, Goodwill Industries, and the Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay. He is also the chairperson for the Massachusetts Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee. Mr. Gittens is an alumnus of Northeastern University’s School of Law and earned his B.A. in Political Science from Northeastern University as well. He is married to Donna Latson Gittens and they have two children.

Austin Blackmon
Chief of Environment, Energy, & Open Space City of Boston Austin Blackmon is Chief of Environment, Energy and Open Space for the City of Boston. His Cabinet is comprised of the Inspectional Services Department, the Environment Department, and the Parks and Recreation Department. Mr. Blackmon serves as the Mayor’s appointee to the boards of the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority (MWRA), Boston Groundwater Trust, Boston Harbor Islands Alliance, and the Boston Harbor Islands Partnership. Mr. Blackmon also represents the City on the Boston Green Ribbon Commission, the State’s Global Warming Solutions Act’s Implementation Advisory Committee and the State’s Energy Efficiency Advisory Council. In his role, Mr. Blackmon oversees a variety of major policy and program initiatives including the Rental Inspection Ordinance, Building Energy Reporting & Disclosure Ordinance, and Greenovate Boston, a sustainability education and outreach initiative. Mr. Blackmon is currently leading efforts to implement the 2014 Greenovate Boston Climate Action Plan, which was released in January. Prior to working for Mayor Walsh, Mr. Blackmon held various positions in clean energy consulting and finance, most recently as Head of Project Finance of TerraVerde Renewable Partners. Mr. Blackmon is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School.

Workshop Sessions The Workshop Sessions are highly interactive 55-minute workshops on climate and sustainability topics run by community members and local businesses. Workshops will run in parallel during both rounds of sessions. All workshop sessions will take place in various meeting rooms on 3rd floor of the Current Student Center. Maintaining Boston’s Trees & Open Space Trees and open space are a critical part of the Climate Action Plan — they have numerous public health benefits and are a valuable climate preparedness tool. Learn from city officials and organizations about the benefits of trees and best practices for maintaining Boston’s urban canopy. Integrating Sustainability into Boston Public Schools Young people across Boston are leading the way on climate change, and it is important that schools work to foster green behavior and prepare for a green economy. This workshop will focus on making sustainability a connected theme throughout the public school curriculum and programming. Neighborhood Sustainability Planning As neighborhoods begin to organize around sustainability, it is important to identify the specific needs and concerns each community faces. Hear from city representatives and local leaders about best practices of community engagement, innovation, and climate preparedness strategies. Residential Energy Efficiency Learn about energy efficiency incentives currently available in the City of Boston as well as current barriers to multi-family energy efficiency. Join key stakeholder from utilities, city government, local partners, and installers on ways to scale energy efficiency work.

Sustainability in Higher Education With over 20 colleges and universities in Boston, higher education institutions play a crucial role in shaping the City of Boston’s overall climate work. This workshop will highlight best practices for student engagement and higher education’s impact on the surrounding community. Community Workshop 1: Toxic Chemicals in the Built Environment: Bridging Sustainability and Health This workshop will discuss how the sustainability movement toward greener building design has an opportunity to consider how building occupants interact with the space, and how the chemicals used in the indoor environment can affect our health. Kathryn Rodgers, a scientist at the Silent Spring Institute will discuss the ways institutions and governments can incorporate these ideas into their sustainability plans, and delve into research the Institute conducts on studying chemical exposures in the indoor environment. Community Workshop 2: Thriving with Water - A Community Process Our communities are threatened by increased chances of severe weather and disruption brought on by climate change and rising sea levels. The presenters in this workshop will work with the audience to model a way of preparing each community to thrive in the face of these new challenges, a process that can be rolled out across the communities of Boston.

Boston Public Schools Recycling Competition Awards The Boston Public Schools Race to Recycle competition is a three week recycling program that encourages recycling among BPS students and Staff. By recycling materials from the classroom and cafeteria in a single stream, Boston schools are educating the community about the importance of recycling, decreasing Boston's greenhouse gas emissions, and saving valuable natural resources. This year's Race to Recycle winners will be announced during the Summit Awards Ceremony and will receive recognition in the following categories: Race to Recycle Royals - awarded to the school with the highest recycling diversion rate over the 3 week competition: Curley K-8; runner-up: Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers, grades 9-10 Recyclemaniacs - awarded to the school with the biggest increase in recycling diversion rate from the baseline rate over the 3 week competition: Curley K-8; runner-up: Baldwin Early Learning Pilot Academy Recycle Education Rockstars - awarded to the school that best engaged their students and staff with education for how to reduce, reuse, and recycle: Boston Green Academy
