Supporting the Psychological Health of Those Who Live in Poverty
DESCRIPTION Living in poverty exposes people to stress, which can lead to psychological challenges. The extent to which the experience of living in poverty affects people is partially a reflection of their resiliency skills. This presentation will review variables believed to influence mental health outcomes and discuss skills that may help individuals not only survive the experience, but thrive in the long-run. OBJECTIVES
Name poverty-related variables that are associated with mental health issues. Describe an “acceptance-based” approach to responding to thoughts, feelings, and urges. Describe how “self-compassion” strategies can be used to build resiliency
