TEACHERS COLLEGE READING AND WRITING PROJECT PRESENTS the Third Annual april 20-22, 2017 Teachers College, Columbia University
Digital and Media Literacy Institute The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project is thrilled to offer this institute for a third year. For the first time, it will offer advanced as well as first year sections. We have also extended this year’s institute to include K-1 teachers as we believe that this work is important for our youngest learners. The entire institute focuses on the integration of digital and media literacy with tried and true reading/writing workshop methods. You’ll be introduced to our latest and most successful methods for tapping the power of digital tools and media within the workshop classroom in order to foster digitally literate students. Instructors will show you how new media can help young people learn about the role of the audience, the importance of text-based ideas, and other essential concepts. You will also learn how to use multimodal texts to increase comprehension and how to engage kids in digital and media production. Not only will you study ways to promote students as self-navigators and digital citizens, but you will foster your own digital literacy skills. Students will be dazzled by encountering writing and reading in new mediums. The challenge is to maintain high standards while propelling them to explore the whole while world of digital and media literacy. You will leave with armloads of strategies, resources and ideas for bringing 21st century learning back to your school. We are excited to build on the energy and excitement from past institutes.
Participants Participants will include teachers and instructional leaders who work with students in grades K-8 and who want to learn ways to take digital tools to your school. Participants must have a basic knowledge of digital devices and bring a laptop or tablet to the institute. Participants may qualify for the advanced section if you attended the Digital and Media Literacy Institute in Paris in 2015 or at Teachers College in 2016. That is, we do not use an applicant’s knowledge base or skill set to place someone in advanced. Advanced participants can expect to join educators committed to the work of creating access for all students using the most state-of-the art methods and tools available. You will use the strategies developed in past institutes while learning ways to seamlessly and purposefully integrate digital tools into existing Units of Study for reading and writing in innovative ways. We ask that you come prepared with digital work you have piloted in your own school, as well as come with a willingness to co-create new materials with colleagues. Time will be set aside each day for institute participants to take part in participant-run think tanks and ignite sessions so as to ensure as many voices as possible can contribute to everyone's shared understandings.
