Classic 3.5 Day Zambezi Itinerary DAY 1

After a hearty breakfast at the waterfront we will enter the national park and hike down to the Boiling Pot. Then we will head upstream on a mini expedition to the Minus Rapids. A short paddle, scramble and swim take us to where few have ever been, under the spray of Victoria Falls. This is a great chance for a spot of lunch in a cauldron of basalt rock with echoes of white water legends. A rare view up at the Mosi Oa Tunya sets the scale for the next four days. Then in the afternoon we’ll take on the signature section of the Zambezi and some of the worlds most famous rapids such as The Stairway to Heaven and The Midnight Diner. DAY 2

DAY 3

Wake yourself up with a refreshing dip in the river and get tucked in to cowboy coffees and bacon rolls. More thrilling rapids to negotiate on this section. Start the day off by taking on The Overland Truck Eater, pay respects to The Mother and take on the hardest hitting rapid of the trip, Oblivion. Tonight we camp on a beautiful wilderness beach, we now have the Batoka gorge to ourselves.

From this point onward the gorge opens out, however today we face some of the trips biggest challenges. This will be the longest day on the river with three of the biggest and most challenging rapids Open Season, Chamamba and Upper Moemba. After setting up camp we head over for sundowners at the majestic Moemba falls. With no more rafting to come now is the perfect time and place for a BBQ and party in one of the most beautiful spots of the trip. DAY 4

There may be no rafting today but the highs don’t need to stop here! We catch a helicopter back to Livingstone. The flight through the Batoka Gorge is exhilarating with hair-raising views of the rapids. An aerial view of Victoria Falls will send us back to Livingstone with adventure and The Zambezi in our hearts.

• Find the cheapest flight combination to Livingstone. Unless it is massively cheaper it is better to land in Livingston Airport which is only 10mins from town and an easy transfer to your accommodation. • Stay in an Adventure Village Tent at the Water front and let us organise your logistics for you. Taxi costs add up so base yourself where the action is and save yourself the hassle. Enjoy a comfortable twin share safari tent with a fan and solid floor. It’s more comfortable and more private than a dorm room. • Do an overnight trip to Moemba falls. It’s not a true expedition but by using road support moemba falls is reachable over two days saving on logistics. This is a great option for kayakers and those with limited time or budget. • Transfer back from Moemba by vehicle, whilst not quite as spectacular as the Helicopter option it’s an incredible drive through a beautiful landscape with potential to stop and explore traditional villages and pick up some authentic wooden carvings as a souvenir.

Ru’s Expedition and Travel Advice What to bring to Livingstone in general • Zambezi Expedition Season is hot and dry. Pack for temperatures in the high 30’s. • Party shirt for Sunset cruise. • Mosquito repellant. What to bring for your expedition The top tip is pack as light as possible. Everything you take on the river should fit into a 30 litre dry bag. I recommend bringing your own warm weather sleeping bag but remember SAFPAR will provide all camping gear. I’m sure you will find the less you have the easier it will be. This is my complete packing list for the expedition season between September and November. Dry clothes • Shorts, cotton shirt, sandals or flip flops On the River • Long sleeved shirt or rash vest with swim wear or board shorts. On very hot river days I like to wear a cotton shirt with a collar which keeps me cool and protects from the sun. • Chacos type sandals to protect your feet from the hot black rocks Toiletries • Wilderness wash or soap • Tooth brush and paste • Personal treatments and medication For sun and humidity protection • Wide brimmed sun hat • Sunglasses • High factor sun lotion • Lip protection Gadgets • Head torch • Water bottle

What to do on your day off A game drive in the Mosi Oa Tunia national park is a great way to relax. Sink a few beers and spot some game in Zambia’s smallest national park including elephants, giraffe and buffalo with the highlight a great chance to see Zambia’s biggest heard of white rhino. Travel vaccinations and medication Please consult your doctor or local travel clinic for information regarding travel to Zambia. They are likely to recommend a series of standard travel vaccinations and Malaria prophylactic medication. Remember if you don't get bitten by mosquitos you can not catch malaria, so use mosquito repellant and sleep under nets at night. There are very few mosquitos in the Batoka gorge and virtually zero in the dry season, but we will bring spare mosquito repellant with us just incase.
