DISTRICT 748 LEADERSHIP SARTELL-ST. STEPHEN
COMMUNITY
Welcome to the SartellSt. Stephen Schools! It is my privilege to serve as the Superintendent of this fine district. It is our goal to keep our practice squarely focused on our mission to “develop well rounded citizens capable of becoming successful and contributing members of our society.” I am very proud of our students and staff and the manner in which they strive to meet this mission. The 2017-18 school year is the starting point for upgrading our district facilities with resources provided by our successful bond referendum in May 2016. During the summer of 2017, Pine Meadow Elementary, Oak Ridge Elementary, and Sartell Middle School had significant improvements made to their buildings to make them more safe and comfortable. Earthwork has begun on the new Sartell High School site and over the course of the school year, the building will begin to rise out of the ground! The plan is to move into the new Sartell High School in time for the start of school in the fall of 2019. It is an exciting time! This calendar features many of our wonderful programs as well as the events that keep our school community busy. It is filled with images and information that reflect our Sabre Pride and I hope you find it a useful resource. Our community support does not go unnoticed. It is a point of pride for all of us and I want to personally thank you for your contribution to our success. Sincerely,
Jeff Schwiebert Superintendent of Schools

EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY Why is Sartell Middle School so unique? Because the students that bring it to life make it so! Besides infancy, adolescents experience the greatest brain growth of their lives and this is the reason we are so committed to immersing students in new experiences and opportunities. With an emphasis on meeting these unique needs of adolescent learners, teachers and staff provide a caring and nurturing environment coupled with comprehensive academics and a wealth of activity options all designed to grow each child to their potential.

THIS IS WHERE SCHOOL BEGINS At the District 748 Early Childhood Center, we believe parents are the first and most important teacher in a child’s life. We work hand in hand with parents to prepare for school success. Students learn through play experiences to develop social skills, literacy and motor skills through exploration and problem solving. We offer many different programs to meet the needs of our families with children birth to age 5. In addition to family education classes, we offer Early Childhood Screening, 3 and 4 year-old preschool programs and wrap-around care. Early Childhood Screenings are held by appointment Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

EDUCATION FOR TODAY & TOMORROW The foundation for teaching and learning in the Sartell-St. Stephen School District is rooted in our mission “where excellence is the expected outcome of all learners.” We believe preparing students today and for the future means providing them with a 21st Century skillset integrated across all learning areas. This is accomplished by focusing on differentiating instruction, personalizing education for students, utilizing technology to maximize student achievement, and ensuring best practices in instruction and assessment in every classroom.

BUILDING EXCELLENCE In May of 2016, the communities of Sartell and St. Stephen approved funding of a long-term school district facilities plan. The plan has three main goals of creating additional space, ensuring safety, security and well-being for all and designing flexible learning spaces that meet the needs of our next generation of learners. A significant impact of the plan is the construction of a new high school to open Fall 2019. The concept for the new Sartell High School celebrates learning in an environment that is open and connected. The building will bridge general learning to specialized spaces which will allow the flow of the learning to be visible.

CREATING WITH MAKER SPACE A makerspace is any learning environment that provides materials and equipment for students to conceive, create, collaborate and learn in a self-directed manner. It could be creating with circuits, coding, or designing on a LEGO wall. This hands-on experience means students immerse themselves in problem solving and building life and career skills including planning, critical thinking and communication. Our elementary and middle schools have makerspaces which allow students to tinker formally and informally.

THE ARTS ABOUND In District 748, the arts are alive! Visual Art, Theatre and Music are integral parts of our district K-12 curriculum with opportunities for building and showcasing skills both in and out of the classroom. In all three arts areas, students have the choice to engage in co-curricular experiences ranging from the middle school musical to high school pep band. As a matter of fact, this calendar is filled with the photography of our Sartell High School Yearbook and Photography students! Bravo!

KIDS CONNECTING TO COMMUNITY Sartell Middle School 7th and 8th grade students value service to others and get a real-life experience of giving and gaining. Students spend a day with many community organizations such as Head Start, St. Benedict’s Senior Community, Talahi Care Center, Country Manor, Whitney Senior Center, Tri-County Humane Society and others. It is a day of celebration as students have the rich experience of providing care to others by giving of themselves. They quickly learn that they gain as much as they give when they experience building relationships, self-confidence and the understanding that they personally have the ability to make a difference in the world.

WE ALL PLAY A ROLE Transportation, Food Service, Technology, Buildings and Grounds, Business Services and Health Services are often the unsung heroes in our schools. Supporting students and staff behind the scenes, in the action and all around town, these groups keep things moving and shaking. Making sure our sidewalks are safe, creating healthy meals, providing care for a scraped knee, getting students to school and ensuring their iPads are up-to-date are just a few of the many responsibilities that are carried out on a daily basis.
