[email protected] Department Overview: Fire District No. 7 is a combination department with 50 career employees and 65 volunteers. The district covers 75 square miles in and around the City of Ferndale Washington. We currently have six fire stations utilizing 24 pieces of fire and EMS equipment. The district has career staffing at four of these stations, 24-hous a day, supplemented by the dedicated volunteers who are assigned to all six stations. The Fire District provides fire suppression services, hazardous materials response along with Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support EMS service. In 2016 the district will answer nearly 4400 calls for service. The number of calls for service has been increasing steadily since the early 1990s. Ferndale is located on the I-5 corridor with easy access to both Seattle and Vancouver. Puget Sound is only minutes away and offers great boating and fishing. The Mt. ● High School Graduate/GED or equivalent.
● Minimum 21 years of age at time of application closing date. ● Current Washington State EMT-P or NREMT-P.
● Valid Washington State Driver’s license by date of hire.
● Good driving record. Record will be checked during background investigation.
● Candidates must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. ● Fire service experience is required, with proof of graduation from an accredited fire academy. ● The successful candidate must meet LEOFF 2 eligibility requirements.
● Able to pass fire district physical ability testing and pre-employment medical screening.
Preferred Qualifications
● 3 years of experience as EMT-P
● Washington State and/or Whatcom County EMS protocol experience ● Rapid Sequence Induction (RSI) experience
Hiring Process Candidates who meet the cutoff score and pass the physical ability test will be posted to the eligibility list. The District will determine a number based on percentage of candidates to be invited to participate in the District's background check, Oral Board Testing, Skills Assessment, and Chiefs Interview process. When a vacancy occurs, the top candidates on the list will be forwarded to the Chief for further screening. Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: No Felony convictions. Misdemeanor convictions will also be reviewed. A misdemeanor conviction will not necessarily disqualify an applicant, but offenses within the last 7 years by their nature and recentness may reveal a lack of specific qualifications for the position. Driving Disqualifiers: Requires excellent driving record.

Lateral Entry Level Firefighter/Paramedic An eligibility roster is being established for the position of Lateral Entry Firefighter/Paramedic. The list will be used to fill vacancies occurring for at least one year from the date the list is certified. Presently, there are no vacancies for this position. Firefighter/Paramedics provide fire suppression, medical aid and protective services to the residents of the Fire District, as well as other assigned duties to assist in the operation of the District. This position exposes the applicant to hazardous conditions and risk of personal injury. Presently Firefighters work a 24-hour rotational shift, however, in time of need, they may be are assigned to daytime shifts M-F 0800-1600 hours.
