SUTHERLAND SECONDARY SCHOOL-PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL
MEETING MINUTES Monday, February 5, 2018 Sutherland School Library, 7pm PAC Executives in attendance; Chair: Tracey Morettin Secretary: Francine Shefley
Treasurer: Darren Franko DPAC Rep: Debra Dennehy
1. Welcome • Tracey welcomed parents, staff and SLC reps to the PAC meeting. 2. Report from Student Leadership Council • Ghazal and Tara talked about the SLC selling candy grams to celebrate Valentines Day, the upcoming filming of a video for “Pink Shirt Day” and the plan to distribute food to those in need at Oppenheimer Park on February 23rd. 3. Report from Mr. Aw-Young • Socials Explore 10, an Outdoor Education program for grade 10 students which incorporates work experience, received funding from the PAC to include a winter camp. A slideshow documenting the first such camp which took place after Christmas Break with a group of 30 students, Mr. Aw-Young and two former Outward Bound guides was shown at the meeting. The camp will not run in the second semester for a number of reasons; a female guide was not available, the tents aren’t designed to withstand winter conditions and such a trip at the beginning of the program may be too much of a challenge. Other options are currently being considered to replace the camp but transportation costs are presenting a challenge. - The final project will be to solve an urban planning problem. Students would need to poll 100-500 people and present their proposed solutions to the City. • The Global Perspectives program has a trip to Ottawa planned next week as well as a trip to Seattle. Food, specifically GMOs, is the main theme. • There will be a student meeting for those grade 11 or 12 students (in the 2018/2019 school year) interested in an international trip to Ecuador. The trip is led by Insight Global Education and would take place during Spring Break 2019. It would be 10 days in length at an approximate cost of $3500-$4000 per student. The parent meeting (if there is enough student interest) will take place before this upcoming Spring Break. • The Socials Explore 9 program for the 2018/2019 school year will soon be accepting applications. A teacher reference is needed and academic standing is considered. In lieu of the work experience hours the Socials Explore 10 program incorporates, the grade 9 program has a volunteer component of 20 hours. • The Science Co-Op is a work experience program for grade 10 students.
4. Treasurer’s Report • Online banking is now set up. • Signing authority has been updated. • Nine scholarship cheques have been cashed. • $41k in bank account, however none of the teachers’ requests for funding have been fulfilled. 5. Fundraising Update-DDA

There is no clear answer as yet if this mark will be considered by post secondary institutions. • There is a self reflection part at the end of the exam that will not be marked but is only to be used for feedback for those designing the exams. 9.
