ETHICS OF SCIENTIFIC ADVANCES
Like any technology on the cusp of innovation, it often comes with its own set of ethical issues.
FACE TRANSPLANTS According to Ludwig Wittgenstein, a famous Western philosopher, “The face is the soul of the
body”. Face is the only part of our body which we cannot truly hide. Our faces make us unique and tell our stories, our heritage and our experiences. We learn to react to people’s facial expressions from our childhood and tell our stories through our facial expressions. Besides these social behaviors, we do some essential acts required for the survival with the help of some part of our faces. We take in food through our mouth, breathe air through our nose and see the world with our eyes. Now imagine having these essential organs damaged due to some accident or cruel act of fate. Most people with these types of horror stories are in severe pain, both physical and psychological, due to the fact that their body parts are damaged and they have virtually lost their identity due to the disfigurement. Now a question arises, can anything be done to help these victims of tragic accidents lead a normal life? In the past, the answer could have been no, we can’t do anything. At present, we have a new and promising option which can help these patients to a great extent; the “Face Transplant”. According to the people who have elected to have this operation, they feel much better than before they had the surgery. But, just like with every new therapy related to organ transplantation, there arises the question of ethics. How ethical is it to carry out a face transplant?
1 After reading the above and watching the video about the firefighter’s face transplant, What are your thoughts about putting the face of a stranger on another’s face. Explain.

ETHICS OF 3D BIOPRINTING •
One of the foremost issues is that of "playing God", a term some use to express unease with actions that use technology to outwit fate or ignore "the will of God". This perspective on biotechnology has caused a rift in its reception and thus in the scope of its influence.
•
This issue is closely related to the possibility of immortality. The availability of bioprinting technology is at this point contended—if human immortality is achieved through the process, it is likely to be available to only the wealthy. Earth's human population would also increase, a value that some claim already exceeds the planet's carrying capacity.
•
In addition, there is the possibility of strengthened "cyborg" organs, printed using nonhuman components. This thought combines the issues above, also conjuring images of a more robotic society lacking in "humanity".
•
The issue of quality control also exists. So far, there are no measures in place to legally ensure that bioprinted organs are of excellent condition. This lack of regulation could lead to the exploitation of unknowing patrons in the creation of unhealthy or low quality body parts. 15
2 After reading the above and watching the videos on bioprinting, what are your personal thoughts on the issue. Explain.
