ENGLISH IV AGENDA Sept 6-Sept 9 Please note that agendas are updated throughout the week and are flexible. Unit: Persuasion, personal writing, and college essays Homework for the week 1. Student Information Sheet due Tuesday, Sept 13 2. Finalized Zeitgeist films are due On Wednesday, Sept 7 Tuesday, Sept 6 Journal: We review persuasion answers with class help. • Review persuasion answers for 15 minutes max. • I discuss ten-dollar essay (see instructions online) • Students may ask questions for up to 20 minutes to see how to win the money. • Students get 45 more minutes after journal to finish films or start Ten-Dollar Essay (if they want). Wednesday, Sept 7 Journal 4: Please list three criteria you think a college admissions board is looking for in a college essay. Please explain/ define each of your criteria. • Students work on ten-dollar essays for 45 minutes only. • Remember ETHOS= you must appeal to your audience (that person is me). • We watch student films. • If time remains, I discuss and show example of Criterion Matrix with fast food. Thursday, Sept 8 Journal 5: Create an index card mini-auto biography by accomplish the following: Describe yourself, your life, your struggles, your passions, your beliefs, etc. in 7 words ONLY. • Finish Student Films • Begin College Essays by discussing journal from Wed. and reviewing a criterion Matrix. • College Essay assignment begins. ◦ Step 1 ▪ Students read college essays silently for aprox. 35 minutes. ▪ While reading, each student identifies 2 strengths and 2 weaknesses in each college essay by paraphrasing strengths and weaknesses and/or by adding direct support from the essays with quick explanations. ▪ Four essays equals 8 strengths and 8 weaknesses. ◦ Step 2 ▪ I remind students about the criterion matrix with multiplier and fast-food example. ▪ Students create some criteria for grading.

▪ Students evaluates readings in group according to criteria they created. ▪ After scoring each essay, groups must explain in writing what they thought were the strongest and weakest essays and why. ◦ Groups share out findings with the class • Step 3 ◦ Dittmar tells which ones “got in.” ◦ Dittmar discusses common mistakes. ◦ Dittmar assigns College essay with due date. ◦ If time allows, students begin college essays.
