Purpose: Fetal Fibronectin Testing is a test available for asymptomatic patients who may be at risk for preterm labor only if ordered by attending physician. Policy: Fetal Fibronectin Testing will made available only in Watauga at this time due to the High Risk Maternity Clinic at the discretion of the attending physician. The policy will be implemented Procedure: 1. Fetal Fibronectin testing will be made available in Watauga clinic by MD. 2. Testing should only be obtained from symptomatic patients between 24 weeks 0 days, and no later than 34 weeks 6 days of gestation. 3. The sample should be obtained prior to cervical examination and in the absence of intercourse in the previous 24 hours. 4. The specimen will be taken to Watauga Medical Center Laboratory as soon as possible for testing. 5. Results should be available within one to two hours. 6. If the test results are positive the patient will be informed. 7. The chart will be flagged “At Risk for Preterm Labor” and flagged “High Risk”. 8. Signs and symptoms of preterm labor will be reviewed. 9. The patient will be instructed to monitor for contractions, and to go to Watauga Medical Center if needed. 10. Fetal Fibronectin testing may be repeated in one to two weeks if indicated. 11. Fetal Fibronectin testing should not be utilized on low risk asymptomatic patients or before 24 weeks-0-gestation or after 34 weeks-6 day gestation. 12. Testing should not be done if ruptured membranes are present or if cervical dilation is greater than or equal to 3 cm. 13. Fetal Fibronectin testing for asymptomatic clients who are at risk for preterm labor will be performed only at the discretion of the physician providing coverage for maternity clinic.
