Fall and Winter Sports: PE Waiver for 1st Semester The board policy reads: “A school board may excuse pupils from engaging in physical education courses who request to be excused for the following reasons: (1) for ongoing participation in an interscholastic athletic program (Grades 9-12), NJROTC or competitive marching band (Grades 9-12), (2) to enroll in academic classes which are required for admission to an institution of higher learning provided that failure to take such classes will result in the pupil being denied admission to the institution of his/her choice, or (3) to enroll in academic classes which are required for graduation from high school provided that failure to take such classes will result in the pupil being unable to graduate. School boards shall establish a policy to excuse pupils on an individual basis.” (Reference Board Policy and Procedure 6:280, 6:310) If your child qualifies for a PE waiver for any of the above reasons and would like to apply for one for first semester, he/she should pick up an application in Student Services. Your child should complete the application along with your signature and return it to their counselor for review. The deadline for completing this process for first semester is June 1, 2018. For the 2018-19 school year, most students that were interested have already completed this process with their counselors. Incoming 9th graders will have to complete their waivers by August 24, 2018. The Associate Principal will review the application and either confirm the athlete’s participation per the team roster or confirm the necessity of a waiver due to reasons 2 or 3 in the policy. NOTE: The PE class will be replaced with a closed study hall or the required class (see above policy). Attendance is required at study hall. Failure to attend the required study hall can result in automatic revocation of the PE waiver. If a student applies for a PE waiver, is assigned a study hall and does not tryout for the sport, the student will be put into a PE class and have to make up all missed PE classes. PE Waivers for participation in Athletics requires: • Full-time student • Grade 9 -12 • Member of an athletic team • No PE course deficiencies • No study hall in semester schedule If you have any questions, please contact Robert Hartwig, Associate Principal, at 847-718-4012.
