72 HOUR KITS Get ready for one of the most important scavenger hunts you will ever go on! Haha! The idea behind a 72 hour kit is to have everything your family will need in an emergency gathered together. If an emergency happens, you won't have time to go searching the house for everything you need! Be sure to put them in something durable-preferable light weight and water proof. Many people use 5 gallon buckets, backpacks, or duffel bags. Store these kits in an easy to access place like a closet near the front door. You can find most of these items at Walmart or local sporting goods stores! If not, look online, they are easy to find! Now....ready....set....GO! BASICS __LED flashlights, (ONE FOR EACH KIT! I recommend LED because the battery life is MUCH longer and they are usually built better!) __pocket knife/multi-tool (at least for each adult, maybe not for the littlest ones...haha!) __walkie-talkie (OPTIONAL: Both my husband and I have one in our packs in case we are separated.) __binoculars (OPTIONAL) __A compass and map of your area (Also...learn how to use them!) __waterproof/windproof matches __flint fire starter (OPTIONAL...in case you run out of matches!) __camp cookware/mess kit and utensils (One per kit) __Sterno and foldable camp stove (At least for each adult) __camp axe (At least one per family) __nylon rope-25 ft. __work gloves (One pair per pack, garden gloves work, too!) __duct tape __radio (The hand-crank kind is great!) __extra batteries (For flashlights) __garbage bags (Several per pack!!! These are SUPER useful!) __compact tent (One per family) __tarp (At least one per adult) __blanket/bedding (I just got some of those fleece blankets from Walmart! Roll it up and tie it with rope. One per kit!) __hooded poncho (one per kit!) __emergency/space blanket (One per kit!) __whistle (One per kit!) __hand warmers (Get several for each kit!!!) PERSONAL CARE ITEMS __travel size deodorant (One per adult/teenager) __toilet paper (One roll per person!) __travel size shampoo, conditioner and lotion __travel size soap
__travel size pack of Kleenex (One per pack) __travel size pack of diaper wipes (One per pack, great for cleaning up/bathing!) __feminine products (yay....) __bug spray __toothbrush and travel size toothpaste. (One per pack) __sunscreen __chap-stick __foldable mirror __antibacterial hand wipes __sewing kit __razor __comb/hair ties FOOD & WATER Food options can be changed according to what your family will eat! There are lots of options out there. MRE's, cans of soup, ready to eat macaroni, even things like Hormel ComplEats, tuna and saltines...anything with a good shelf life that won't spoil! Let your kids help pick out what they want for their meals! Here's what we have: __SNACK FOOD: trail mix/granola bars/beef jerky/crackers __instant cocoa packets __boxes of dry cereal/instant oatmeal packs/pop tarts __fruit snacks/candy/happy foods. :) __packaged squeezable applesauce __MRE's (We got ours from BePrepared.com, but you can find them TONS of places online!) __bottled water __flavor packets __water purification tablets __water purification bottle/LifeStraw/Katadyn water filter (THIS IS A MUST!!!! I have a LifeStraw in each of our packs!!!) __gum MEDICAL/FIRST AID __Band-aids of various sizes __antibiotic ointment __thermometer (Preferably not the glass/breakable kind!) __triangular bandage __eye rinse __antiseptic wipes __calamine lotion (Anti-itch cream) __medical tape __sterile gauze bandages various sizes __acetaminophen and ibuprofen __antacid tablets __non-latex gloves __burn cream
__tweezers __scissors __Blister Care Band-aids/moleskin __Masks (Look for N95 ones!!!) __Personal medications (Inhalers, anti-depressants, etc.) __ACE elastic bandage __First Aid Guide CLOTHING Keep in mind climate and size changes as time goes on! Switch out the clothes in your packs as the seasons change and as they grow! __one change of clothing per person (don't forget underwear!) __one change of footwear per person __extra socks per person __winter hat (One per person!
