Reflections, Announcements, News, Thoughts The Pastor’s RANT… November, a Month of Gratitude In just a few weeks, we will celebrate Thanksgiving Day and begin the very busy holiday time. Recently, a member of our parish traveled back east to visit family. Upon returning, the person made a simple observation about his parish here…we have it really good. This is not to demean another parish community or to be arrogant about our own. It just reminds us that the first step to gratitude is awareness of the things we so often take for granted. It is so easy to embrace a mentality that everyone has what we have and that is not the case. In this lull before the rush of holiday time, we might take the opportunity to pay attention to the simple things that are only noticed when they are gone. What or whom might that be for us? Waiting until Thanksgiving Day to show our gratitude might seem tempting in our busy lives. But, regret is very profound and painful for the one who waits too long to appreciate the people and blessings they had all along and didn’t know it.

Marking the End of… The Year of Mercy Closing of Cathedral Holy Door Solemnity of Christ the King Saturday Nov 20 10:30am Mass Please join us on the Vigil of the Solemnity of Christ the King as we close out this Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. A special prayer and closing of the Cathedral Holy Door will take place at this mass. All are invited to join us as we recognize the abundant blessings of mercy given and received during this past church year. Come, join us!

Thanksgiving Day Mass & Blessing of the Table Bread Thursday November 24th 9:00am Please join us for our special mass on Thanksgiving Day as we thank God for His abundant blessings. Please remember our special tradition: the blessing of the table bread. This tr adition invites us to bring to mass the bread we will share at the table later in the day as family and friends gather together. We will place the breads on a table before the altar. At the end of the mass, we will bless the breads as a prayer of blessing for our families. The collection for this day will be donated in its entirety to Catholic Charities to support their charitable works of service to the poor. Please come and join us for this wonderful day of Thanksgiving! Please Note: there will be no 7:00am or 12:07pm daily masses on this day only!

News & Notes Diocesan Synod Update On the weekend of October 30-31, the diocese of San Diego held the first diocesan synod in the nation of the theme of marriage and family life outlined in Pope Francis' encyclical on The Joy of Love. A synod brings together representatives of the entire Catholic community in a diocese for dialogue, deliberation, prayer and decision making. For our synod here in San Diego, every parish had a delegate, as well as the university communities, theological faculties and members of the diocesan pastoral staff. These delegates included priests, religious sisters, mothers, fathers, deacons, and young adults of every culture and language. The deliberations at the synod pointed to the need for renewed dedication of married couples toward embracing the depth, permanence, sanctity and sacrifice which lie at the heart of the Catholic conception of marriage. The discussions emphasized the need to make a spirituality of marriage and family life more available to our parishioners, especially to young couples who often find it less automatic to bring prayer and the Gospel into their marriage and role as parents. The Synod pointed to the need to invite young couples lovingly, non-judgmentally and energetically into Catholic marriage and to provide mentors for them. The delegates spoke movingly to the need for the Church to reach out to divorced men and women at every moment of their journey, to support them spiritually and pastorally, to help them move through the annulment process, and to assist those who are divorced and remarried and cannot receive an annulment to utilize the internal forum of conscience in order to discern if God is calling them to return to the Eucharist. Finally, the Synod proposed a spirituality of family life which is deeply inclusive: embracing mothers and fathers beautifully bonded in their married love and the love of their children, as well as single parents, those who are widowed, our many military families where deployment brings great stress, LBGT families, families which deportation has split and families with members who have special needs. During the coming months Bishop McElroy will be working with a committee of synod delegates who will focus on the implementation of these goals. It is our hope that through this initiative the grace of married and family life will be profoundly deepened.

Bible Timeline Series

As part of our “Growing in Our Faith” program we are beginning an 8 week series for those interested in getting more out of our Scripture readings at Mass and the Bible in general. The course is designed to teach you how to navigate through the Bible while discovering and learning concepts from our Catholic Faith. Learning to navigate the Bible will offer a comfortable pace and a new perspective. A color illustrated timeline is provided for each participant. The eight weeks are divided into one, four week block on Thursday, November 17th. The second part will begin after Christmas on January 13th.There will be an opportunity for a “catch up” session before then. Each Thursday session will be from 6:458:15pm. We value your time and promise to start and stop each session ON TIME. The sessions are held in the parish rectory. Our goal is to give you a strong Catholic foundation that helps you “grow in your faith”. For more information please contact: Chris Carstens [email protected]

Faith Formation Faith Formation is a vital element of every Catholic parish. The role of parish faith formation is to provide organized and systematic approach to the instruction and practice of the faith for everyone in the parish community. The goal of this formation is to give each member an understanding of their faith so they can evangelize and witness to the faith in the greater secular community. The programs offered at Saint Joseph’s Cathedral parish reflect the diversity of an urban Southern California parish. In addition to the weekly catechetical program special events and speakers are presented throughout the parish’s pastoral year. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) RCIA an Invitation for everyone to Community in Christ. At St. Joseph Cathedral’s parish community we believe that everyone has an invitation to join the RCIA process. The RCIA’s invitation is for those individuals who have not been baptized and wish to enter into a relationship with Jesus Christ in the Roman Catholic Faith Community. The invitation is for those from other Christian Faith communities who wish to become members of the Roman Catholic Church. Catholics who have not completed the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist will find the invitation is for them to complete those sacraments. Catholics who have not been active in their faith and wish to return to an active sacramental relationship with the faith community will find the RCIA a place to have that journey. Also, Catholics who wish to renew their faith by refreshing their knowledge of the church’s teaching are most welcome. Evangelization and Catechesis are the hallmarks of the RCIA at St. Joseph Cathedral. For more information write Bill Bischoff at [email protected] or call the Parish Office.
