ABOUT NIFTEM National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) was conceptualized by Government of India on persistent demand of the food industry to have an Apex Body as a One Stop Solution Provider for the various problems of the sector. Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India has set up this institute with an initial investment of Rs 500 crore (US $100 million). The institute is spread over an area of 100 acres. The institute intends to act as a centre of excellence and an apex world class centre of global standards in the area of Food Technology and Management. It will cater to the needs of various stakeholders such as entrepreneurs, industry, exporters, policy makers, government and existing institutions. Food Industry in the country looks forward to a rapid growth with change in socio-economic environment and food consumption pattern of the prospering population in general and of the youth in particular. Indian Food Processing Industry is growing at a rate of 15.9% per annum as compared to the total industrial growth of 3.7%, in the country. The food processing sector had attracted a foreign direct investment (FDI) of 188.67 million US$ in 2010-11. A study conducted by Institute of Applied Manpower Research (IAMR) predicts that, there is a wide skill gap at various levels in food sector touching around 35 million by 2017. Thus Food Industry is going to be a major employer in the coming future.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES AT NIFTEM

NIFTEM aims at seamlessly blending various facets of the food industry from production to retail, to ensure that all those involved in these activities reap maximum benefits. It envisages being a focal point for catalyzing the growth of food processing industries. The Institute is offering B. Tech., M. Tech. and Ph. D. degree programmes in Food Technology and Management and at the same time taking up initiatives for research and extension activities. For designing the curriculum of the proposed B. Tech. and M. Tech. courses, a Task Force of subject experts was constituted. They prepared a detailed syllabus which was sent for an extensive review to about 250 distinguished professionals in the area of food science and technology both at the national as well as the international level. The academic curriculum was then modified as per the suggestions and comments proposed by the reviewers from the food processing industry, as well the academic institutes. A unique flavour of the curriculum is the blend of technology and management which is reflected in the undergraduate and post graduate programmes of NIFTEM. B. Tech. Programme At undergraduate level, NIFTEM offers B. Tech. degree programme

in Food Technology and Management. This programme is unique in India and blends the basic essence of Food Science, Engineering and Management, meeting the needs of the food sector. The duration of the course is four years divided into two semesters per year. M. Tech. Programmes Five M. Tech. programmes are being offered for the academic year 2012-13. ACADEMIC SUPPORT FACILITIES AT NIFTEM LABORATORY AND PILOT PLANTS NIFTEM has 14 teaching and research labs related to all the areas of Basic Sciences, Food Science and Technology, Engineering and Workshops. NIFTEM offers a solid foundation in both theoretical and applied aspects of food processing and food business. The institute offers teaching and research programs in many cutting-edge science and technology areas. The institute houses state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities in food and allied areas. In addition to labs, five pilot plants covering Fruits & Vegetables, Dairy & Dairy Products, Cereal & Pulses, Meat & Poultry etc. are in construction. They will be used for experiential learning by students and providing exposure of working environment of Food Processing Industries. The pilot plants will also be used for scale up process, commercialization of business ideas and development of entrepreneurship in future. NIFTEM KNOWLEDGE CENTRE (LIBRARY) The NIFTEM Knowledge Centre (NKC) is a five storey building having an area of 6580 Sq.m. The state-of-the-art NKC is housed in aesthetically designed boat shaped signature building amidst the NIFTEM campus. The aim of the NKC is to cater to the needs of the Graduate & PostGraduate Students, Research Scholars and the faculty members of the Institute. It also caters to the needs of the Research Scholars and Faculty members through internet/ intranet by providing information services to all the stakeholders relating to bibliographic,

full text digital and printed resources to support the scholarly and informational needs of the institute community. The NKC has a unique set up of Information and Library Network system and is equipped with modern infrastructure. Readers can access NKC records on the Internet/Intranet. The NKC also provides all possible information through Internet for its users. ADMISSION GUIDELINES FOR B. TECH. PROGRAMME Eligibility The candidate must n have passed 10+2 or its equivalent with a minimum average of 60% of marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) or Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology (PCMB). SC/ST candidates must have secured at least 55% marks in aggregate in PCM/PCMB. (Also see Note 1 and Note 2) n have passed 10+2 or XII exam in 2010, 2011 or appearing/ passed in 2012. Candidates passed 10+2 or XII exam in 2009 or before are not eligible. Result is to be produced during counseling. n have completed age of 17 years on or before 31st December 2012. (Note 3) Note 1. A candidate, who gets a compartment in the 10+2 held in March/April, 2012 will not be eligible for admission even if he/she clears the same (by appearing in the supplementary examination) before the reporting/ counselling dates. Note 2. Aggregate percentage of marks in 10+2 or equivalent examination shall be worked out as suggested by the certificate awarding Board/ University/Council. If the Board/University/ Council awards grades without providing equivalent percentage of marks on the grade sheet, the candidate, should obtain a certificate from the respective Board/ University/Council specifying equivalent percentage conversion formula, and submit the same at the time of reporting/counselling. In the absence of such certificate, the decision of the Admission Cell regarding his/her eligibility shall be final. Note 3. The date of birth as recorded in the high school/first Board/Pre-University certificate will be accepted. If the certificate does not mention the date of birth, a candidate must submit along with the application, an authenticated document indicating the date of birth. Other Eligibility Conditions For admission to the B. Tech. courses, each candidate must (a) be an Indian national, (b) bear a good moral character and should not have been 8

debarred from any institution/university, (c) submit a physical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner. Selection Procedure for B.Tech. Programme The admission to the First Semester of the B. Tech. (FTM) programme will be offered to the candidates based on their All India Rank in AIEEE-2012 (All India Engineering Entrance Examination - 2012). Counselling for admission will be done by NIFTEM. Number of Seats Total seats = 120 The number of seats in the B. Tech. program in NIFTEM, as announced in this admission brochure, shall be strictly adhered to, except for such minor adjustment as may be necessary on account of rounding off of fractions to accommodate reservations, as given below: i. 27% reservation to Other Backward Class (non creamy layer) ii. 15% for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes. iii. 7.5% for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes. Further, 3% seats are reserved for physically challenged (PC) candidates. The physically challenged candidates should have a minimum of 40% disability, provided that the claimant in this category is otherwise capable to pursue the course for which the admission is sought. All physically challenged persons should produce a certificate of their permanent physical disability from a Civil Surgeon of a District OR Director/Principal or a Professor of a Medical College affiliated to University or an institution of national importance. Submission of Application

At the time of reporting for counselling/registration, all candidates shall present the following documents in original and should submit self attested photocopies of the same:

Tech. programme is to be submitted along with a non-refundable application fee of Rs. 1000 (General/OBC) and Rs. 500 (SC/ST), in the form of Demand Draft drawn in favour of Registrar, NIFTEM on any nationalized bank payable at Kundli, Haryana. The application form, along with the Demand Draft and relevant attachments as applicable, must be sent by speed post so as to reach The Head, Admission Cell, NIFTEM, Plot No. 97, Sector-56, HSIIDC Industrial Estate, Kundli - 131028 (Haryana) by 16th June 2012. Tech. in Food Process Engineering Management. Applicants are advised to give their choices for different courses after carefully studying the eligibility requirements. Candidates appearing for final year examinations of above in 2012 may also apply. Provisionally selected candidates will be required to produce their proof of passing the above qualifying examination by 31.8.2012, failing which provisional admission will be cancelled. The admission to the M. Tech. programmes will be based on the GATE score (Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineers) and personal interview (30 marks). Merit list will be prepared based on valid GATE score and marks obtained in the personal interview, which will be displayed on the NIFTEM website. After the admission of eligible GATE qualified candidates, the remaining seats, if any, will be filled by non-GATE candidates (B.E./B. Tech./M.Sc.). Non-GATE candidates would require to qualify the Common Entrance Exam (70 marks), conducted by NIFTEM and to be held at NIFTEM campus, Kundli only.

Admit cards for this Common Entrance Exam could be downloadable from NIFTEM website, if the test is required to be held. No separate admit card will be posted in this regard. Updates can be seen from the website time to time. Final merit will be prepared by combining the marks obtained in the Entrance Test and the Interview (Maximum Marks 30). Other Eligibility Conditions For admission to the M. Tech. courses, each candidate must n be an Indian national n bears a good moral character n should not have been debarred from any institution/ university n submit a physical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner. Selection Procedure for M.Tech. Programmes A merit list of the eligible candidates will prepared on the basis of their valid GATE scores followed by an interview (70% weightage of GATE score and 30% interview). Seats in respective branches will first be filled by GATE qualified candidates and the remaining vacant seats, if any, shall be offered to other candidates on the basis of their marks obtained in Common Entrance Exam conducted by NIFTEM and an interview. The non-GATE candidates may note that the Common Entrance Exam shall NOT be conducted, if all seats have been filled by GATE candidates. In that case the claim for refund of application fee shall NOT be entertained. Pattern of Examination The written test conducted for non-GATE candidates shall consist of seventy (70) objective type questions of one mark each. There shall be no negative marking. The duration of the test will be one hour. The test shall consist of two parts. Part-A shall contain twenty (20) questions to test the mental agility of the candidate. Part-B shall contain seventy (70) questions to test candidate's technical background in their eligibility areas, of which any 50 questions are to be answered. In case a candidate attempts more than 50 questions, only the first 50 attempted questions shall be evaluated. 11

ADMISSION GUIDELINES FOR M. TECH. PROGRAMMES Submission of Application Filled in Application form for M. Tech. programme is to be submitted along with a non-refundable application fee of Rs. 1000 (General/OBC) and Rs. 500 (SC/ST), in the form of Demand Draft drawn in favour of Registrar, NIFTEM on any nationalized bank payable at Kundli, Haryana. The application form, along with the Demand Draft and relevant attachments as applicable, must be sent by speed post so as to reach The Head, Admission Cell, NIFTEM, Plot No. 97, Sector-56, HSIIDC Industrial Estate, Kundli - 131028 (Haryana) by 16th June 2012. (23rd June with late fee of Rs. 500 in addition to the application fee, i.e. Rs. 1500 – for General/OBC and Rs. 1000 – for SC/ST). Envelope should be super-scribed as “Application for M. Tech. Admission” All candidates should submit the following self attested certificates along with the filled up application form: i) B. E./ B. Tech./ M. COMMON POINTS FOR B.TECH. & M.TECH. ADMISSIONS 1.

Candidates are advised to read the Information Brochure and instructions carefully.

2.

There is no regional/state/other quota for admission at NIFTEM.

3.

The venue of reporting and counseling will be NIFTEM, Kundli, Haryana. The important dates and the detailed schedule of the counseling dates are given at the end of this brochure. Individual Counselling letters will NOT be issued.

4.

Any change in dates / schedule will be notified on Institute's website: www.niftem.ac.in. The candidates are advised to visit the website regularly.

5.

In case, a candidate has previously secured admission in another institution and, because of this reason, is unable to produce his/her original certificates at the time of reporting/counseling, he/she may be allowed provisional admission, provided he/she produces a certificate, from the competent authority and on the authorized letter of the head of the institution where he/she has taken admission, to the effect that all his/her original certificates are kept with that institution, along with copies of his/her certificates attested by a Group A gazetted officer. He/ She will be required to submit his/her original certificates for verification within two weeks time of getting such provisional admission; otherwise his/her admission shall stand automatically cancelled.

For registration, students are required to bring DD for prescribed admission fee for first semester and three recent-identical passport size photographs. The students are also required to produce anti-ragging duly notarised affidavits on Rs. 10/- stamp paper, as per Format-4 and Format-5.

NIFTEM will be a fully residential institute for students; therefore it is mandatory for the students taking admission at NIFTEM to take hostel accommodation.

Visitors/parents may avail the facility of Guest House by requesting Asst. Registrar (Administration) for advance booking (First come-first serve basis).

The Institute generally discourages refund of fees, after a candidate has taken admission at the institute. In exceptional circumstances, the request for refund will be considered as per the Institute Rules. The decision of the institute shall be final in this regard. However, there shall be no refund of fee, except refundable deposits, if a candidate withdraws his/her seat after the last date of admissions at the Institute for 2012-13 i.e. August 11, 2012.

10. Interchangeability and transfer of seats: After 2nd counselling, any unfilled seat(s) reserved for ST Category will be converted to SC Category and vice versa. After exhausting all the SC/ST candidates, the unfilled reserved category seats shall be filled by other candidates in order of merit.
