Saint Andrew’s Refugee Services, Cairo English Teacher, Adult Education Program Founded in 1979, St Andrew’s Refugee Services (StARS) is a refugee service provider in central Cairo that works to enhance the quality of life for refugees and vulnerable migrants through four programs: Education, Legal, Community Outreach, and Psychosocial services. Program Overview: Adult Education Program StARS Adult Education Program (AEP) serves over 850 students each term, offering English and Arabic language classes as well as classes for Computer Skills and various livelihoods initiatives. The Program consists of three 12 weeks terms throughout the year. Classes are 1.5 hours each and take place twice a week, Monday to Thursday and Saturday from 3 to 8 pm. Role Under the supervision of the AEP Coordinator, the English teacher will join a team of 9 English teachers in the Adult Education Program to teach various levels of English classes. The English teacher will be responsible for preparing and delivering English lessons for up to five separate classes, using the syllabus provided. Class size generally ranges from 15 to 25 students. This is an excellent career development opportunity for someone who wishes to teach in a multicultural environment, improve adult education, and support refugees and migrants in Cairo. Responsibilities Teaching To hold and mark placement tests according to AEP schedule. To determine class composition based on placement test results and students who previously selected. To teach up to 5 classes and deliver (15 in-class teaching hours per week, late afternoon/evening schedule, Monday to Thursday and Saturday). To work for a minimum of 35 hours inside and outside classes per week. To teach English language to students across a variety of ability levels and classes according to the determined schedule. To prepare and submit lesson plans to the Coordinator of the Adult Education Program before each class. To teach all the assigned lessons throughout the AEP term, using interactive and motivating teaching Strategies, and use content taught to prepare students for a final exam. To create and grade regular quizzes in order to engage students and ensure learning.
To pay attention to the learning needs of students, respond to them on the individual level and to take them into consideration when developing the program. To prepare the final exams in full formatting prior to final exam period, test students, mark the exams and provide final grades in the designated score sheets template which provided by the AEP coordinator. To keep track of attendance and daily class work grades for all students. To use the provided text and materials to prepare students for a final exam. Seek and use outside resources when necessary to achieve learning objectives. To use technologies in the teaching/ learning process. To provide score sheets and final grades and for each student to the AEP Coordinator at the end of the term on time according to the dates the AEP Coordinator decides. To apply the instructional values of AEP and follow any updates or changes to improve the program. To follow the direction of the AEP Coordinator and Education Director and follow all StARS policies.
Programmatic and administrative duties To attend staff meetings, and other trainings as required. To register students and handle registration fees during the registration days each term. To submit registration forms daily to the Coordinator of the AEP at the enrollment days. To keep track of attendance and daily class work, homework grades for all students. To substitute and cover classes when required or assigned by AEP coordinator. To support AEP Coordinator and staff in other duties as needed. To apply the instructional values of AEP and follow any updates or changes to improve the program. To work cooperatively with the AEP Coordinator and all AEP and Education staff To do other duties in line with the role, as assigned by AEP Coordinator. All of the above should be carried out in StARS’ premises and with respect and nondiscrimination, and in line with StARS general policies. Qualifications The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, have a passion for teaching, and knowledge of the educational needs of vulnerable people and in particular have the following qualifications and experiences:
Having fluency in English and proficiency in spoken and written English is required. Having an academic degree or certification in education/ teaching OR extensive applicable experience teaching in official classroom settings. Having a teaching qualification (like CELTA or TEFL) is an advantage. Having two or three years of previous teaching experience is preferred with a variety of learners and ages. Having a work history that demonstrates a commitment to professionalism, effective communication skills, and the ability to work with a multicultural team. Having an experience working with migrants or refugees. Having an experience working in international development. Having a positive attitude and collaborative approach to dealing with students and staff. Having patience, creativity, and comfort teaching and managing a classroom. Having a desire to work with adult students from diverse backgrounds. 2|Page
Having the ability to commit to at least one year.
Hours: The full time teacher will generally be expected to work from Monday to Thursday and Saturday between 01:00-08:00 pm (Saturday 11:00 am-06: 00 pm). Additional work is sometimes necessary outside of these hours. Salary: 3350 EGP per month after completion of a three-month probation period (initially 3050 EGP) plus 175 EGP per month medical allowance and 50 EGP per month pension contribution.
