Notes: Most EWM points recorded with GPS coordinates represent single plants. A few represent clumps of 2-5 plants. All EWM plants were observed in less than 6ft of water. Hand-removal of these plants is recommended as an easy and inexpensive method. Common bladderwort (Utricularia macrorhiza [previously called U. vulgaris]) was abundant in the northwest bay, mostly along the bottom of the lake. This bay is ideal habitat for common bladderwort, and it is thriving along with watershield (Brasenia schreberi). Whorled watermilfoil (Myriophyllum verticillatum) is scattered throughout the northwest bay, mostly along the N/NW shores. This species is uncommon in our area and rarely becomes a nuisance like its Eurasian cousin. Deer Lake has an impressive aquatic plant diversity for such a small lake.

Notes: 6 EWM fragments seen. None were rooted. Small population of creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia) seen on shore just east of the north boat landing, forming a small mat near the water. This species probably won’t become a concern but its presence should be noted.

Little Hills Lake – Waushara County AIS survey results June 12th, 2013 Conducted by Paul Skawinski and Mike Copas, Golden Sands RC&D; Francine Marshall and , Little Hills Lake During the course of the survey, observed native aquatic plants were also recorded. AIS & Aquatic Plant List (AIS highlighted in red and marked with an asterisk*) *Banded mystery snail Illinois pondweed Water celery Flat-stem pondweed Sago pondweed *Hybrid watermilfoil (Eurasian X northern) Stiff pondweed Muskgrass (1 species found – Chara contraria) White water lily Variable pondweed Hardstem bulrush Large-leaf pondweed White-stem pondweed Small pondweed Fries’ pondweed Slender naiad *Yellow Iris Soft rush Broad-leaf cattail Northern watermilfoil Creeping spikerush Needle spikerush Water smartweed Floating-leaf pondweed Watershield

Notes: Hybrid watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum X M. sibiricum) (HWM) was scattered in shallow water less than 5 feet deep, primarily near the boat landing but a few plants were observed in a small bay on the southwest part of the lake. These plants in the SW bay were very shallow and were removed by hand. Hand-removal is recommended for the remaining plants, as they are widely scattered in shallow water and water clarity is high. All locations of EWM/HWM were recorded with a GPS unit. All points represent individual plants or small clumps of 2-5 plants. Eurasian (EWM) or HWM was reported along the west side of the Camp Lakotah beach in past years. No EWM or HWM plants were observed. A rake was dropped four times in this area to survey the deeper water, and plants collected on the rake are shown below: Rake 1: Large-leaf pondweed, Fries’ pondweed, muskgrass, slender naiad Rake 2: Fries’ pondweed, muskgrass, slender naiad, flat-stem pondweed Rake 3: Muskgrass, variable pondweed, Fries’ pondweed Rake 4: White-stem pondweed, slender naiad, muskgrass

Yellow Iris (Iris pseudacorus) was observed at the west end of the Camp Lakotah beach. Several clumps forming a line about 10ft long occurred in about 1ft of water. This species is non-native and can become a nuisance. Therefore, they should be removed from Little Hills Lake. Three species of turtles were observed during the survey – painted turtle, common map turtle, and spiny softshell turtle.

Notes: Lake is usually inaccessible because of low water levels. Vast majority of lake is covered by water lilies. Abundant creeping and common bladderworts throughout lake. Huge population of freshwater sponges, occurring throughout entire lake.

Long Lake – Waushara County AIS survey results July 2nd, 2013 Conducted by Paul Skawinski, Golden Sands RC&D During the course of the survey, observed native aquatic plants were also recorded. AIS & Aquatic Plant List (AIS highlighted in red and marked with an asterisk*) Variable pondweed Illinois pondweed Sago pondweed Northern watermilfoil White water lily Floating-leaf pondweed Common waterweed Large-leaf pondweed Three-square bulrush Muskgrasses (4 species found – Chara aspera, C. contraria, C. braunii, C. globularis) Hardstem bulrush Slender naiad Fries’ pondweed Flat-stem pondweed Bald spikerush Small pondweed Small duckweed (Lemna minor) Water smartweed *Purple loosestrife Lake sedge *Banded mystery snail Broad-leaf cattail *Narrow-leaf cattail Soft rush Common bladderwort Bullhead pond lily White-stem pondweed Leafy pondweed Southern naiad Stiff pondweed

Notes: Long Lake has a great diversity of native aquatic plants, particularly in the two sheltered bays on the west end and the sheltered bay on the east end. Much of the unsheltered, open-water area is colonized by abundant, short carpets of muskgrasses (Chara spp.) and a few large pondweed species. This vegetation likely helps hold sediment down during times of heavy recreational activity and maintains the excellent water clarity of Long Lake. Two clumps of purple loosestrife were located – one at the west end and one at the east end. These clumps were pulled out by the roots with the assistance of Jim Schiek, Long Lake Board Member. Both

clumps had flowered and seeded last year, so there is potential for seedlings to sprout up in the areas where these plants were located. Banded mystery snails were found in very low numbers, primarily along the central north shore. Most of the snails observed during this survey were native species.

AIS & Aquatic Plant List (AIS highlighted in red and marked with an asterisk*) Muskgrass (1 species found: Chara contraria) Slender naiad White water lily Bullhead pond lily Soft rush *Banded mystery snail Broad-leaf cattail Fries' pondweed Hardstem bulrush Bright green spikerush

Notes: Visibility about 2.5ft. Hybrid watermilfoil was reported by lake group but was not observed during this survey.

Mecan Springs – Waushara County AIS survey results July 3rd, 2013 Conducted by Paul Skawinski, Golden Sands RC&D During the course of the survey, observed native aquatic plants were also recorded. AIS & Aquatic Plant List (AIS highlighted in red and marked with an asterisk*) Sago pondweed *Curly-leaf pondweed *Eurasian watermilfoil Floating-leaf pondweed Variable pondweed Illinois pondweed Horned pondweed Water smartweed White water crowfoot Water cress Round-leaved monkey flower Muskgrass (1 species found: Chara contraria) Common waterweed

Notes: Many large colonies of poison sumac and Angelica atropurpurea. Most areas devoid of aquatic vegetation. Many large springs seen. Heavy weevil damage on EWM. Boat landing very murky abundant common carp in area. Rest of system very clear. Abundant small snails found attached to sago pondweed plants throughout system.

Mielke Lake – Waushara County AIS survey results June 20th, 2013 Conducted by Paul Skawinski and Andrew Teal, Golden Sands RC&D During the course of the survey, observed native aquatic plants were also recorded. AIS & Aquatic Plant List (AIS highlighted in red and marked with an asterisk*) Large purple bladderwort Creeping bladderwort Variable pondweed Sago pondweed Pickerelweed Bald spikerush Slender naiad Striped white water lily (Nymphaea odorata subsp. tuberosa) Bullhead pond lily Northern manna grass Muskgrasses (2 species found - Chara contraria, C. braunii) Small pondweed Water smartweed *Narrow-leaf cattail *Hybrid cattail Swamp dock Hardstem bulrush Northern St. John’s wort Needle spikerush Crested arrowhead Water bulrush Broad-leaf cattail Bristly sedge Phragmites (native ecotype) Southern naiad Watershield *Reed canary grass *Chinese mystery snail *Yellow Iris

Notes: Mielke Lake has a small walk-in trail (~20ft) from a parking area to access the lake. Water level was up at least 8 vertical inches from last year, so many shoreline plants were growing submerged this year. Mielke Lake’s aquatic plant diversity is impressively high, and the plant community is more typical of a northern Wisconsin lake. Chinese mystery snails were widely scattered throughout the lake. Yellow Iris was found at one location near a dock on the south side of the lake. This species is non-native and can become a nuisance on lakeshores, so it should be removed.

Morris Lake – Waushara County AIS survey results June 18th, 2013 Conducted by Paul Skawinski and Erika Taylor, Golden Sands RC&D; Joe Slezak, Morris Lake District During the course of the survey, observed native aquatic plants were also recorded. AIS & Aquatic Plant List (AIS highlighted in red and marked with an asterisk*) Water celery *Yellow Iris *Banded mystery snail White water lily Muskgrasses (2 spp. found – Chara aspera, C. contraria) Common waterweed Northern watermilfoil Common bladderwort Sago pondweed Illinois pondweed White-stem pondweed Small duckweed Dotted watermeal Columbian watermeal Forked duckweed Coontail Clasping-leaf pondweed Bullhead pond lily Stonewort (Nitella flexilis) White water crowfoot Aquatic forget-me-not *Eurasian watermilfoil *Curly-leaf pondweed Southern naiad Water stargrass Freshwater sponges Broad-leaf cattail Blue-flag Iris Hardstem bulrush Giant bur-reed Pickerelweed

Notes: Survey conducted by kayak and by pontoon boat provided by Joe Slezak. Eurasian watermilfoil and curlyleaf pondweed were found in the NE corner of “Lake C” near the inlet. Both species were present only in very low numbers. This same area was one of a few with dense colonies of Cladophora, a filamentous algae, which may indicate high nutrient loading. Aquatic forget-me-not (Myosotis scorpioides) was found along several properties on the north side of “Lake B”. This species is not a priority species, but it is non-native and can become a nuisance.

Banded mystery snails were common throughout most of the lake system. Yellow Iris was observed at 47 properties throughout the lake system. This species is non-native and can become a nuisance. It is recommended to remove these plants from the shoreline of Morris Lake.

Lake Napowan, Waushara County AIS survey results July 16th, 2013 Conducted by Kaycie Stushek, Golden Sands RC&D During the course of the survey, observed native aquatic plants were also recorded.
