Consortium of Undergraduate Law & Justice Programs Annual Meeting San Francisco, CA 8:00-8:30 Breakfast 8:30-9:30 Informal discussion with Michael McCann in his new role as President of the Law and Society Association. Dr. McCann has worked with the Consortium since its beginnings and is very interested in further developing the relationship between CULJP and LSA. 9:30-10:30 Reports/follow-up In light of our planning discussion last year, our formal meeting will begin with reports/updates from programs we heard in depth about last year. Hamilton College reported that their minor in Jurisprudence, Law, and Justice Studies was approved to begin Fall 2011. An overview of the program is linked here. Melissa Stimell briefly commented about Brandeis’ international semester program in The Hague. Further information on the program is linked here. Break 10:40-12:15 Community Based Learning programs (CBL) and internships. Doran Larson of Hamilton College will discuss his efforts to get Humanities based programming into Attica. Last year he gave a paper on his own creative writing class. This year the discussion will be about student and faculty involvement in the creation of further educational programming in Attica in collaboration with local colleges. A summary of the Program is linked here. Melissa Stimell of Brandeis will present on a class-based internship program. The course is titled “Advocacy for Policy Change.” The goal is to connect students with the Massachusetts legislative process on issues of social justice. Steve Herbert of the University of Washington will present on the extensive experiential learning projects they are running through the Law, Societies and Justice program. 12:15-1:30 Lunch (at the Center)
1:30-2:50 Curriculum: Capstones and Gateway courses. We invite open participation during this session. Curricular developments. Questions: general planning and content for gateway and capstone courses? Should we have more core courses? Should we initiate more“tracking” (in the sense of guiding themes for them to fit courses into) and guidance for students? Break 3:00-4:30 “Origins” and development of diverse Law and Society undergraduate programs Michael Musheno, Berkeley, gave this PowerPoint overview of their program. Renee Cramer, Drake University, discussed the development and status of the Law, Politics & Society program. To view click here. Jinee Lokaneeta, Drew University Each participant will present on the history of and the current activities/growth of their respective Law and Society programs. We have representatives from a long-established program at Berkeley, a fast-developing program at Drake, and a relatively new program at Drew.
