What’s happening in Music Class?!
ABOUT ME I am so excited to be working in the Highland School District this year as Assistant Band Director at HHS, Band Director at Grantfork Elementary and Music Teacher for Grantfork, Alhambra, and Highland Elementary. This is my 5th year teaching, but my first with Highland School District. My husband and I recently relocated from Jacksonville, IL back to our hometown of Breese. I was previously a K-6 music teacher for schools in the Jacksonville School District. My husband Sam is a Police Officer in Breese where we live with our 2 dogs, George and Walter, and our 2 cats, Layla and Taco. We are getting very excited for the end of October when we will welcome our first child, “Baby Boy” Lohman into our hearts and home!
Kindergarten and 1st Grade is learning many different animal songs to learn steady beat. We have studied monkeys, elephants, bears, and even mice. Ask your child about their walk through the jungle! 2nd Grade is learning to use their best singing voices and listening ears as we experience new music each day! We are focusing on responding to music and applying our “brain power” to music to make connections. They were especially excited to hear familiar music from the recent Olympics! 3rd Grade is learning about pitch and melody, high and low, and repeated notes. Students learned about the dulcimer, a mountain instrument, and can perform the song “Rocky Mountain” 1 st , 2 n d , and 3 rd Grad ers recent ly perf orm ed s ongs f or th eir pa re nts at Alh ambra’s Grand parent s Da y Celebrati ons. We hope y ou got to hea r and enjoy thei r songs!
4th and 5th Graders are learning about basic rhythm and composition. Composition is the art of writing music. Students used dice to play a game, which helped them compose a song. Next, we will add instruments and perform our final version on boomwhackers for the class. Boomwhackers are individual, color-coded, plastic pitched tubes. 5th Grade Band is underway with a total of 14 band members this year. We have a well-balanced ensemble of… 1 flute, 2 clarinets, 2 saxophones, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 2 baritones, and 3 percussionists.
