Advanced Professional Program in English-Medium Instruction (APPEMI) APPEMI is a professional development program designed for higher education instructors whose native language is not English, but who use English to teach courses in their subject areas. The program welcomes instructors of all experience levels and disciplinary backgrounds. The overarching academic goal of APPEMI is to assist participants to develop skill in current English-medium instruction methodologies. At the same time, participants enhance the oral and written language necessary to teach their courses using English.
An Award-Winning Program In 2016, APPEMI received a national award for program excellence from the Canadian Association for University Continuing Education. The award recognized APPEMI’s innovative approaches, value and service to stakeholders, and enhancement of continuing education at the University of Alberta and within the community.
Program Structure There are eight courses in APPEMI. They have been carefully crafted to provide participants with a theoretical foundation in English-medium instruction while providing opportunities to apply this theory to classroom practice. Each 13-hour course focuses on a specific aspect of teaching in an English-medium instructional context. APPEMI instructors use a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) teaching approach. This approach helps participants to learn course concepts and improve the oral and written English necessary for success in each APPEMI course. Additional English language support is available on request. APPEMI course offerings can be customized to meet the particular needs of participants.
