Approval of Dissertation Committee & Scheduling of Dissertation Proposal Examination Departmental guidelines require that the dissertation advisor be selected by the student in consultation with the Doctoral Program Director and approved by the Doctoral Program Committee. The Proposal Examination Committee consists of one dissertation advisor and a) at least one other member of the departmental faculty and two readers from the faculty of another discipline/institution, or b) two members of the departmental faculty and a reader from the faculty of a related discipline/institution. If an external reader is not selected at the time of the Proposal Examination, a later petition for approval of that person must be submitted to the Graduate Program Committee. Only a committee that has been approved by the Director in consultation with the Doctoral Program Committee will be authorized by the Department to constitute the Dissertation Proposal Examination Committee. This form must be signed by the student and the advisor and submitted to the Doctoral Program Committee with a brief description of the dissertation topic, no longer than one page.
