Enquanto o Programa Monumenta restaurava 76 imóveis multifamiliares do Pelourinho, para neles promover a fixação dos próprios moradores do bairro, coube ao Iphan realizar a pesquisa arqueológica da área, que abrangeu 11 de seus quarteirões. Este registro, elaborado pelos diversos profissionais envolvidos no trabalho, dá conta dos numerosos e imbricados aspectos que concorreram para o sucesso da empreitada: desde as variadas técnicas de prospecção e pesquisa até o levantamento de dados e a análise histórica. É do resultado desse complexo trabalho e do importante volume de conhecimentos produzidos que o público leitor e, em especial, os gestores de obras de restauro de sítios urbanos históricos poderão valer-se agora.
